WASHINGTON -- Rep. Cynthia McKinney, the Georgia congresswoman who had a physical altercation with a police officer, is speaking out about the episode after saying she regretted the incident.
But she has refused to apologize in a statement and a brief on-camera interview.
The six-term congresswoman apparently struck a Capitol Police officer when he tried to stop her from entering a House office building without going through a metal detector. Members of Congress wear identifying lapel pins and routinely are waved into buildings without undergoing security checks. The officer apparently did not recognize McKinney, she said in a statement.
Asked on-camera Thursday by WSB-TV of Atlanta whether she intended to apologize, McKinney refused to comment. A news conference scheduled for Friday morning was canceled. She issued a statement late Wednesday saying she regretted the confrontation.
"I know that Capitol Hill Police are securing our safety, and I appreciate the work that they do. I have demonstrated my support for them in the past and I continue to support them now," she said in the statement on her Web site.
Capitol Police were considering Thursday whether to ask the U.S. Attorney's office to file charges against McKinney, a Democrat who represents Atlanta suburbs that make up one of Georgia's two black-majority districts.
Democrats and Republicans, meanwhile, engaged in a rhetorical scuffle over the incident.
Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi on Thursday labeled it "a mistake, an unfortunate lack of recognition of a member of Congress." She added that the police officer was not at fault.
"I would not make a big deal of this," said Pelosi, D-Calif.

Well of course you wouldn't.
By the time this is over, the officer will lose his job, have to take a sensitivity class and be forced to give repatriations to all African Americans for slavery.
Darn it, where's some of that good old-fashioned police brutality when you really need it?

b) This is Cindy Lou's fifth altercation with Capitol Hill police - most due to her refusal to wear her pin.
Quel surprise.
I recently served on a Grand Jury. We only ruled on felonies. Many misdemeanors escalated into felonies when a person resisted/touched/struck or swung at an officer. Generally, they were hit with "Obstruction of justice", "Resisting lawful authority" and "Assault of a Law enforcement official" anytime they took a swing. Cynthia deserves no less.
Fox last night had a story about a congressional employee who tried to stop McKinney from coming into the House chamber with guests while members were on the floor in 1997 or 1998. He said she pushed him and went right on in anyway. He said he never pressed charges because he was told by others that it would be the end of his job.
She has established a pattern and until somebody has the cajones to arrest this woman she will continue to think she is above the law.

McKinney was defeated in 2002 after she implied on a talk radio program that the Bush administration might have had advance notice of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. She won back the seat two years later with 64 percent of the vote.

Supermodel Naomi Campbell was free on bail on Friday after being charged with hitting one of her staff with a mobile phone.
(snip) The 35-year-old British model was charged in a Manhattan court with second degree assault ordered to return to court on June 27.
Campbell was arrested at her Park Avenue apartment in New York on Thursday after police were called to Lenox Hill Hospital, where 41-year-old Ana Scolavino was being treated for a gash to her head.
"She had lacerations to the back of her head," a police spokesman said, adding that the woman claimed Campbell had hit her with her a telephone.
This is the same old racist cow that said that President Bush and members of his administration have personally profited from the attacks of 9-11." She is from Georgia and is in a mostly black district so that is how this racist black cow is getting elected..In my opinion I think that this police officer should sue the crap out of her or sue the state of Georgia for sending a racist abuser to Washington..
