If gay marriage becomes legal, its opponents have been warning, the next step in America's moral deterioration will be legalized polygamy. These conservatives won't be happy with "Big Love," the HBO series starting tomorrow night.

"Why any man would want to be married to more than one woman is beyond my comprehension."
Because he gets to sleep with multiple women. The question is what kind of woman would take that.
You misread. She isn't addressing the subject of women with multiple husbands. She's saying "having it all" means not having to deal with her kids and husband that much because the other seven wives can take up the slack. Shows how she views time with her family, another chore.
I don't see how they can legitimize incest, as it can create physically and intellectually challenged children. Of course, there's always abortion, right?
(Denny Crane: "I Don't Want To Socialize With A Pinko Liberal Democrat Commie. Say What You Like About Republicans. We Stick To Our Convictions. Even When We Know We're Dead Wrong.")
He would deserve what he got.
That doesn't sound like such a bad deal to me. I enjoy my career, but sometimes would like to homeschool. If I could have a wife... ;o)
Sorry.
Homosexuality was soundly condemned by God in the Bible; polygamy was not.
Then again, if you don't believe in God or the Bible, then your logic might fit...for you.
Obviously if good means one you approve of then you'll probably end up waiting a long time as it seems your mind is made up. On the other hand if you're looking for truth then you better get your ass in gear.
In principle you are correct. However, people who support gay marriage are neither logical nor moral, so unfortunately they won't feel bound by either.
It's actually a pretty cool show....social issues aside.
Can't wait til next week when Paxton goes after the leader; his father in law.
This show is a hoot!
Its actually an excellent argument. Gay marriage looks less like "special" love between 2 people and more like a part of the subversion package.
I hope the gay lobby overplays their hand and starts pimping polygamy. The more twisted, the merrier for the sane ones among us.
I've seen Big Love. I don't know why anyone would want more than one wife. One seems bad enough.
1. Some wives (the youngest and prettiest?) will have higher status than other wives. They will therefore secure a disproportionate amount of their husband's time and money spent on their children instead of the children of the other wives.
2. Children have a right to a traditional marriage (and not to have non-biological parents brought into the marriage for arbitrary reasons)
3. For every additional wife one man has, another man has none. These men with no wives and no prospects tend to stir up trouble. You need a steady way to kill off the surpluss men, like constant warfare, or else face internal turmoil. This has historically been a problem with muslim societies.
4. As wealthy and powerful men accumulate wives, women increasingly become sexual property.
5. As wealthy and powerful men can accumulate more wives than they can satisfy sexually (even though they may breed with all of them). So cheating among these wives is rampant. The husband tends not trust the paternity of his children - they are probably his but he can't be sure. So family lines break up. The husband has more loyalty to his mother and his (half) brothers and sisters, because he can be assured that they have at least half his genes. This is what we see with female farming in Africa
This does not bother me near as much as gay marriage. I never gave it much thought except for Utah jokes which are abundant through all walks of life. I guess because polygamy has always been presented to me in a humerous way, I don't care one way or another about it. I mean who really is going to do this. I bet the percentage would be extremely small. I don't see this being mainstream. This one I will not get all upset about like the gay marriage situation. I don't think that is left thinking, more not caring thinking. Of all things we conservatives have to worry about polygomy was not even on my radar screen this year. It's all about abolishing gay marriage for me.
The Bible doesn't prohibit polygamy like it does homosexuality, true. But I wouldn't say the Bible sees nothing wrong with it. It's clear that Solomon went wrong because of his multiple marriages with foreign women and Isaac did not have a happy domestic home life due to his feuding wives. And the account in Genesis indicates that God's plan is marriage between one man and one woman.
1 Corinthians chapter 7 (NLT)
1 Now about the questions you asked in your letter.
Yes, it is good to live a celibate life. 2 But because there is so much sexual immorality, each man should have his own wife, and each woman should have her own husband. 3 The husband should not deprive his wife of sexual intimacy, which is her right as a married woman, nor should the wife deprive her husband. 4 The wife gives authority over her body to her husband, and the husband also gives authority over his body to his wife. 5 So do not deprive each other of sexual relations.
Thay already do. Second cousins can marry. I don't even know any that do except in West Virgina, Alabama, and Georgia. The rest of the states are safe.
