BUSTED

Still on vacation, but wanted to bring you an update on the American flag vandal at Montebello H.S. (via the Whittier Daily News). He or she was from neighboring El Rancho USD:

A student protest that resulted in a Mexican flag being flown on top of an upside-down U.S. flag at a local school has prompted disciplinary action against one El Rancho High School student.

El Rancho Unified School District officials said the unnamed student was punished for being involved in the flag incident, which took place Monday at Montebello High School, about four miles east of El Rancho High School.

The punishment was consistent with the California Education Code, officials said. They did not give further details because of legal and privacy issues.

But Montebello Unified School District administrators said they were glad the neighboring district investigated the incident and took the proper action.

"We appreciate the diligence that \ district has taken in identifying the student who allegedly committed the infraction with the flagpole incident," said Assistant Superintendent Robert G. Henke.

Monday's image of the Montebello High flagpole sparked an uproar locally and across the nation after it was posted on various Web sites and featured in East Coast newspapers and national broadcast media.

The incident took place about noon Monday, when a group of about 1,000 students from the El Rancho and Whittier Union High school districts marched through Pico Rivera to Montebello High, where students had walked out of classes in the previous week to protest proposed immigration reform legislation.

By the time they reached Montebello High, the campus was on lockdown, district officials said.

That's when the protesters took to the flagpole, added the Mexican flag and turned the U.S. flag upside down. The school's California flag was stolen in the process, Henke said.

Rumors that more student walkouts were scheduled for today, the official Cesar Chavez holiday, has prompted Whittier-area police and sheriff's agencies to step up their efforts, with authorities threatening to give $165 tickets to any student who is caught protesting during school hours.

What are the odds that the guilty student and his/her collaborators are here illegally?

And the odds that anyone will do anything about it?

"First, it would be nice to know what the actual states, second, why is he only being punished under the California Education Code and not under Federal Codes?"

In case you haven't heard, federal laws are no longer being enforced in border states. It's a new initiative to keep down the price of lettuce and cabbages.

It is often a bit of a mystery to those unacquainted with American mores just how inflammatory tearing down the flag is, especially in a time of increased sensitivity when emotions are running high. That is true of young people as well for whom getting a rise out of other people is seldom fraught with consequences until it's too late.

This kind of stuff will get people killed. "We disrespect your national symbol and we're taking over your country" is not the message activists want to send unless they're looking for a fight, not a discussion.

There is a major element of Central- and Southern-American populism that is as senselessly and manipulatively anti-American as its European counterpart, and its adherents don't notice it any more than a fish notices water. And that makes for a very dangerous situation.

Imagine posing this hypothetic to a 'English' speaking mexican - suppose someone went down to mexico illegally and took down their flag, which they seem so proud of, and replaced it with a flag of another country, any country.

What do suppose their response would be?

Now imagine trying to explain, patiently, that that is exactly what they're doing here.

Would light dawn on their feeble brows, or would they continue their myopic thinking?

Just a thought.

I agree with you, btw.

Would light dawn on their feeble brows...

Nope. For a lot of the world the U.S. flag is fair game and their own is not. The politics of outrage is strictly a one-way street, and by the time they get any pushback they're so far over the line that somebody gets hurt.

This particular instance was a dumb stunt by a dumb kid but it isn't isolated, as your links reveal. A whole lot of folks need to crank this thing down before it explodes.

It is in full swing where I live. They hate their Govt.,yet they come here and try to make it a carbon copy.He who grabs the fastest, gets the mostest. The goings on around here never ceases to amaze me.A lot of the wealthy Hispanics are in Govt.,yet it is common knowledge how they acquired it,and it ain't legal. That is how I know how incompetent our IRS is.If they were to come to my town and do some audits, our treasury would see a significant increase!

"Respectful image of our flag from WWII."

Thanks for that, it's good to see.

We need to remember to pay tribute more often.

The [American] flag should be hung upside-down only in times of emergency to signal distress.

So it looks like they accidentally did get one thing right.

"The politics of outrage is strictly a one-way street"

You said a mouthful right there - so much comes to mind other than mexicans, it's not funny.

That list can begin with the so-called 'queer' movement, and continue for some length.

"It is a federal crime to fly an American flag upside down or to fly any other flag above the American flag (there are a few exceptions for US Naval ships at sea)."

I don't know for sure, but I suspect those few exceptions are for signaling distress or emergence on a US Naval ship at sea, and probably never on land.

IOW, just suggested they not get caught doing it again.

It is my opinion that we are already in WWIV ( WWIII being the Cold War ) and there are two, somewhat interlocking elements to it:

Islam, a Religion of Peace®? ( links, blogs, quips, quotes, aggravating pictures ) is located here- click the Pic, and scroll backwards:

"Thunder on the Border," click the picture:

( PS- my personal prediction? That picture will become one of the most widely distributed, and hated, pictures on the internet. The Illegal Invader lobby could not have done more damage to themselves with that "Mexican Flag Superior, America in Distress" shot if they had tried... )
