American reporter Jill Carroll has been released after a three-month hostage ordeal in Iraq and was with US officials inside Baghdad's fortified Green Zone.

Video interview
A video posted on the internet, which could not be independently verified, showed Ms Carroll in an interview apparently conducted by her captors before they released her.
"Did you think the American army or the CIA (Central Intelligence Agency) would save you at any time," a muffled male voice asked Ms Carroll in accented English.
"Sometimes I thought maybe that they might come, they might find me, they might find a way to know where I am and come get me," she answered.
"Why did not they save you?" asked the interviewer.
"I think the mujahedeen are very smart and even with all the technology and all the people that the American army has here, they still are better at knowing how to live and work here, more clever," she said
"Does this mean something to you?" the man questioning her asked.
"It makes very clear that the mujahedeen are the ones that will win in the end," Ms Carroll said in the video.
At the end of the eight and a half minute tape, the same man read out a statement in Arabic.
"The mujahedeen in the land of the two rivers announce the liberation of the journalist Jill Carroll... after the US forces and the CIA failed to find her making their ineptitude obvious to the whole world," he said.
"We liberate this journalist today after the American government met some of our demands by releasing some of our women prisoners."

That's fair enough. Seems to me she's saying she didn't want to die.
"You know that shelf?" she asked. She meant a mirror-backed knickknack cabinet in the entry of the Post house in Baghdad. For one reason or another, it had become a place to put photos of close friends killed over the nearly three years of war in Iraq.
The cabinet had three shelves. Two of the shelves already held a photo, both of them, coincidentally, of young women.
"I kept thinking about that shelf," Carroll said. "I didn't want to be that third shelf."

"One of Carroll's hardest days had been Wednesday, the day before her release, she said, when she broke down and cried hard, muffling the sound with her abaya in the room where she was being held. She prayed."

The article doesn't say.
Classic brainwashing begins by washing the old sense of self, and adding a new one. In basic training, it works by forcing individuals to conform as a team under intense pressure. In Patti Hurst's case, it was days locked in a closet going to the bathroom on herself. I don't doubt this poor girl went through something similar.
After that, the mind is open to receive whatever the trainer wants.
I have no doubt that these guys did something similar, whether they understood what they were doing or not.
I'm not an expert, but I think that "Stockholm Syndrome" and classic brainwashing are one and the same. In one case the individuals merely discover a way to work together by instinct, and in the other it's planned ahead. But the symptoms on the victim are identical.
We just don't encounter it much these days.
Not when she made that video. Give her a few weeks.
However the bottom line is that attacking her is missing the target. No matter how misguided she may be, she is not the enemythose who had her are.
Fortunately our military is smart enough to know the difference. I am really starting to wonder about many folks around here.
We should hold her accountable if she has done anything specific against us.
Now is not the time to decide that. Let's get the real bad guys and leave this misguided girl alone. Wrong target, wrong time.
Ain't it the truth.
I've been remembering all those accusations over the years about conservatives being "nazis" and such, and wondering if they might have had a point.
Between the treatment this poor girl gets on this thread and the immigrant fight, I've been awfully disappointed at Freepers in the last 72 hours.
I can see disagreeing on something, but the pure hatred and nasty posts are just over the top.
Make sure you check out my post 38 to you.
Those who accuse don't have a point. I sincerely believe there are several forces that are trying to play us against each other here in this forum and that was what I was alluding to.
Agendas are carefully masked here. They can remain hidden for a very long time.
That is not to say that there aren't some conservatives that have untenable positions, but most of what we are seeing right now is a big game of divide and conquer.
The illegal immigration thing can be very threatening and emotional for people. I understand that. So do our opponents who are willing to use it to stir up trouble.
It is sad to see otherwise good and decent people get caught in the undertow. But it isn't about conservatives or conservatism. It is about the general fog of war.
I wonder...I get disappointed...but I still believe.
Rock on, Velveeta! (how 'ya been?)
Hey, GMO!
Nice to see a friendly face around. :-)
I've been great and you?
And your plan is to soothe passions and bring folks around to your enlightened position on such topics as immigration by calling them "nazis."
Well, it might work. [/sarcasm]
I heard several reports that, when taken, her driver escaped, but her translator was killed.
She's nothing but a burka-ed, Janeane Garafolo look alike, traitor to her sex. She disgusts me.
Jill Carroll has been caught in a lie, she said her captors never threatened her, when the video evidence proves otherwise...or was it all a scam????
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Or maybe she was just trying to keep them from sawing her head off for the camera. Time will tell...
I don't think they can reach her now.
