The guy seems pretty calm for having his building on fire and being trapped.

FDNY: Sit tight. Do not leave, OK? There is a fire or an explosion or something in the building. Alright? I want you to stay where you are.

Not sure you're supposed to post that much info from NYTimes. That said, the FDNY gave a bit of bad advice there.

I'm not a fireman, but I wonder if you're correct given the circumstances. The guy said that they couldn't get down the stairs and if he was only a few floors up from the crash site I doubt that there was much he could do.

I guess one question that should be asked was how much did that dispatcher (or the FDNY) know about what was going on when that called was placed?

They were doomed.
Once the stairway was destroyed, there was no way to get down.

Apart from the possible use of helicopters (which I was expecting to see while this was happening) you're probably correct.

What I'm uncertain of is did officials order the immediate evacuation of the second tower to be hit as soon as the first strike occurred? If not,why not? If so,was it effective in reducing fatalities in that second tower?

The interesting thing, there was a stairway in the South Tower that wasn't destroyed.
I read that some people got down it.
They were above the plane crash area.
But on the North Tower.
They said the stairway was destroyed.
The big problem was the roofs were locked.
No one could get to the roof.
The helicopter could have maybe sent a rope down to the top floors and attemped to rescue a few people that way.
I wonder why they didn't do that.

I'm amazed that anyone who was above either crash was able to get out.If any such person was an atheist on 9/10,I'll wager that they weren't as of the evening of 9/11.

No one below the explosion got out alive.

As for the 911 operator.......ugh!

Typically low paid, low intelligence jobs. Sadly.

The people in the second tower were told to stay in the building. Some that reached the lobby were told to go back up to their offices.

How many lives were lost due to that misguided advice.

I don't know what SOP is for a sky scraper, and certainly I have the advantage of knowing how it turned out, but I've never heard of telling people in a burning building to stay put.

"Try to find a way out," seems like the better advice.

Amazing.I wonder if these orders were consistent with what was taught during the drills that surely had to have taken place before 9/11.

I can't imagine NYC not having anticipated a major disaster at the WTC or the ESB,particularly after the first WTC attack and,as a result, having come up with some very detailed and specific guidelines/policies for such an event.

Not a pilot, but I don't think it was possible to fly helicopters over the towers -- air currents or whatever affected by the tremendous heat. Could be wrong.

As for officials ordering the immediate evacuation of the 2nd tower, I think that at the time, it was presumed that the hitting of the first tower was a horrible accident. Just some thoughts, not a debate.  :)
