That said,the FDNY gave a bit of bad advice there.

I'm not a fireman,but I wonder if you're correct given the circumstances.The guy said that they couldn't get down the stairs and if he was only a few floors up from the crash site I doubt that there was much he could do.

I guess one question that should be asked was how much did that dispatcher (or the FDNY) know about what was going on when that called was placed?

They were doomed.
Once the stairway was destroyed, there was no way to get down.

I don't know what SOP is for a sky scraper, and certainly I have the advantage of knowing how it turned out, but I've never heard of telling people in a burning building to stay put.

"Try to find a way out," seems like the better advice.
