An eye-opening look at race in schools
(New York-WABC, March 27, 2006) - A provocative documentary suggests that students segregate themselves at lunch on campus.
And those filmmakers brought their project to New York City students. It was a lively discussion. Education reporter Art McFarland has the story.
A magnet high school in Buffalo: the fact that its cafeteria tables are segregated by race, was the point of this documentary film.
Marco Williams, filmmaker: "The school cafeteria is a microcosm of our larger society and how we see one another."
The film is called, "I sit where I want." It poses a number of questions.
Whitney Dow, filmmaker: "Should whites and black sit together ... What is the benefit of that or what is the downside of that?"
As part of a national tour, the documentarians presented segments of the film to students at Manhattan's Facing History High School -- a small public school in its first year.
Aisha Davis, student: "I sit with mostly black people."
This school is almost 100 percent black or Hispanic and still, there seems to be segregation.
Art McFarland: "So people don't see this as segregation?"
Michael Estevez, student: "Not really, they just feel comfortable being with their own people."
In the film, students tried for a day to integrate the cafeteria, with mixed results. The principal of "facing history" high school welcomed the discussion.
Gillian Smith, principal: "It's all about getting to know and celebrating our differences."
Students and filmmaker agree that students will stop segregating in the cafeteria when they feel there is a reason to stop.
Jail Riots Illustrate Racial Divide in California
Let's be for real in the debate on immigration. How does multiculturalism help? Don't you think the melting pot is close to boiling?
On top of that, not to mention the costs of entitlement spending, there are legitimate worries about security.
County leaders respond to immigration bill
"In 2005, over 120,000 other-than-Mexican aliens, including aliens from special interest countries and state sponsors of terrorism entered the United States illegally and were released pending immigration hearings. Most of them failed to appear for their hearing and remain in the United States illegally and undetected," Weldons press secretary,John Tomaszewski said in a statement Monday.
I hope no one drained their wallets to fund this.
"I sit where I want."
You forgot about them discovering that bears you-know-what in the woods. Hey, this is the MSM we're talking about.
Do the jocks sit with the nerds?
Of course not.
They drained YOURS.
They're not fools.
"How does multiculturalism help?"
No. Multiculturalism is state imposed tyranny.
"Don't you think the melting pot is close to boiling?"
Yes, it is, and the poor frog unfortunately ain't yet seen the writing on the American wall or realize that the water is about to boil. Will she make a last-second effort and jump out on time? I doubt it.
I remember discussing this with my kids several years ago. Seems it was just a natural thing - no one really thought about it. I have also found it strange that our churches are so segregated. Most churches are open to all yet blacks attend predominantly black churches and whites predominantly white churches. We have a couple of black families but my church is overwhelmingly white. I think it may have more to do with where people live than any overt racism or prejudice, but that's just my observation.
"On top of that, not to mention the costs of entitlement spending, there are legitimate worries about security."
...and crime, job loss, educational chaos, cultural erosion, language barriers, subculture enclaves and alligiance problems.
I hope Americans won't like their nation being colonized by an alien, 3rd world mass that won't assimilate, speaks a different language, imports different values and is often loyal to a different country.
Beware the enemy within.
People do tend to voluntarily group with people that are the most like them and in many cases that means they group by race. old news...so I hope they did not shell out much money on this.
For years now, we have heard that "diversity" (usually meaning racial or ethnic diversity only) is a wonderful thing...in fact, the Supreme Court has now found it to be a "compelling state interest" that justfies affirmative action programs' obvious violation of the strict terms of the 14th Amendment's prohibition on state laws that classify on the basis of race
Of course, there is never any explanation as to why diversity is such a wonderful thing...or why, if it is such a wonderful thing, it has to be enforced by the state.
Its just stated as a self-evident truth...without any further explanation. When I was in law school, a professor slipped up and offered up his reason as to why diversity and affirmative action are so beneficial..."because white students should be exposed to different ways of thinking" he told us...
to which one brave student responded by asking the professor..."do you mean we whites with our "White Thoughts" should be exposed to "Black Thinking?"
This has been going on as long as humans have been on the earth.
Really now, is it a celebration?
People just fit in with people that they can identify with. I have always found it easier to identify with Asians than I have with other minority groups. I think whites do in general.
Not surprisingly, a church that I attended in California was about 75% Asian, 20% white, and a few others tossed in.
Everything is segregated unless you're separated into parishes. Go to a Catholic Church in California if you want to see integration. It's a sea of nations.
Some stupidity is just too boggling to engage.
