BRITAIN: MUSLIM 'SHINING STARS' TO BE HONOURED

London, 27 March (AKI) - Britain's foreign secretary Jack Straw will on Monday praise the contributions of Muslims to British society in a speech he is to deliver at the annunal Muslims News Award for Excellence, taking place in the capital, London. Mustapha Shafayat, the first England batsman to score a double-century in an under-19 test cricket match against India, has been nominated for this year's award, as has Stanmore Football Club for providing a safe and sociable environment for young Muslims to play football.

Leaders of all three main political parties have sent messages of support to the event, which Ahmad Versi, editor of The Muslim News daily was quoted as saying had become a beacon of light in the midst of such gloom. "In these trying times, it is befitting to honour and acknowedge our shining stars," he added.

Straw's speech is expected to say: "British Muslims are where Britain and Islam intersect. Celebrating their success is the best way of showing that these two identiries can and do thrive in the same place and in the same person."

"British Muslims contribute hugely to this country's success, prosperity and culture and it is only right that this is recognised," Straw is expected to added.

In his message to the ceremony, British prime minister Tony Blair said the awards indicate "the extraordinary contibution of Islam over many centuries to learning, literature, art and science across the world."

The leader of Britain's opposition Conservative party, David Cameron, said the UK must be proud of its "vibrant, multi-racial society," while Liberal Democrat party chief Sir Menzies Campbell said: "Muslims make Britain a better and more diverse country."

Other nominees for the 2006 award include London's mayor, Ken LIvingstone, for building dialogue between the West and the Muslim world and raising awareness about issues affecting the Muslim community, and Channel Four newsreader, Jon Snow, for his in-depth coverage of the Islamic world.

Will there be a posthumous honour for the "shining star" Muslims who blew up the London subways? They're heroes, ya know..

Major contributions of Muslims to the UK:
The bus bomber
The honor killing
The burkha
Sharia
A huge jump in the number of people on the dole
The use of places of worship as weapons storage centers
The elimination of Piglet from public view
The removal of Burger Kings soft serve cone picture for looking like the Arabic form of Allah

I could go on, but you get the general idea.

What a load of crap. Britian would be a much healthier society had Muslims not gone there in huge numbers. I have no doubt that some contribute to the society, but on average the effects are very, very, very, very, very negative.

"the extraordinary contibution of Islam over many centuries to learning, literature, art and science across the world."

Sorry, but I can't really think of anything, except, maybe rugs, but then again, it's not the religion, it's just regional people making rugs. All the great science and learning, etc. have come from the non-muslim countries, whereas the muslim countries have stayed behind by centuries. IMO

They always claim the "zero." What in the world would we do without it?

Yeah! You go, Jack! Heap fawning praise upon those muslims and curry favor with them, and they'll like you.
