The immigration and security debate, which has sparked huge demonstrations in recent days by Hispanic residents of cities around the country, comes at a crucial moment for both parties.
Over the last three national elections, persistent appeals by Mr. Bush and other Republican leaders have helped double their party's share of the Hispanic vote, to more than 40 percent in 2004 from about 20 percent in 1996. As a result, Democrats can no longer rely on the country's 42 million Hispanic residents as a natural part of their base.
In a lunch meeting of Senate Republicans this week, Senator Mel Martinez of Florida, the only Hispanic Republican in the Senate, gave his colleagues a stern warning. "This is the first issue that, in my mind, has absolutely galvanized the Latino community in America like no other," Mr. Martinez said he told them.
The anger among Hispanics has continued even as the Senate Judiciary Committee proposed a bill this week that would allow illegal immigrants a way to become citizens. The backlash was aggravated, Mr. Martinez said in an interview, by a Republican plan to crack down on illegal immigrants that the House approved last year.
The outcome remains to be seen.
Polls show large majorities of the public both support tighter borders as a matter of national security, and oppose amnesty for illegal immigrants. Many working-class Democrats resent what they see as a continuing influx of cheap labor.
The stakes are enormous because Hispanics now account for one of every eight United States residents, and for about half the recent growth in the country's population.

There's no way to determine who is illegal and who is not.

Our "leaders" know it, and that's why they are hispandering to this bloc already.
We've been sold out for a passel of votes, if not silver.
They're not, Prop 187 in California, and Prop 200 in Arizona passed with over 50% of the legal hispanics voting for both bills.
Oh yeah? Think again. We need to wake up. Our "leaders" already know it.
The illegals are already voting, illegally.
No one can stop them apparently, because there is no way to determine who is a citizen or not.

That's why we see the hispandering going on with our "leaders".
The GOP is merely risking Hispanic votes but definitely losing conservative ones, including mine. Worse, many of the Hispanics who protested this week have vowed to vote against Republicans, even though Republcians are the idiots who want to grant amnesty to illegals. Amnesty is going to create 11 million new Democratic voters. But neither Bush nor many Republican members of Congress dread the day their party becomes a permanent minority, as they are perfectly happy to see the country continue its descent into a Dark Age, so long as they get to keep their seats.

I know that if these people get legal status, we'll be forever subserviant to their political beliefs. While legal immigrants tend have more mixed views, illegals don't respect the values of America. The desire a leftward economy/society, which isn't us.
The extreme left will dominate the Dem party, and will consistantly win...if they get Amnesty. This sort of assertion is completely possible. It just can't happen.
Im one of those who is not a big supporter of amnesty. We did it already 20 years ago and the government was suppose to get tough on the border back then. They failed us. I am also a realist. Many illegals are in Iraq, Afghanistan and other countries as American Soldiers. And if they are not illegals, their parents or grandparents are. So, what do we do, send them back to their country once they get out of the military? It takes 6 months and thousands of dollars to deport just one illegal. How long and how much would it take to realistically deport 13 million? They would die of old age before we would get to even the first 25% of them. I am very dissapointed that again 20 years later we are discussing this issue. Amnesty. AGAIN! Obviously the problem lies within out immigration policy and our borders. Let's fix the problem so we are not here again in freerepublic discussing 8 years from now what to do with 50 million illegals. Let's secure the borders and let's do it now. The GOP controls 3 branches of government. If (in this post 911 Era) they fail to secure the borders, they do not deserve to win in 2006.
But of course that is not true entirely...BOTH PARTIES [REPUB, DEM, and yes also the hero Bush] would sooner compromise the laws, culture and integrity of our country just for votes...

In my twisted book it makes them traitors...but I am just stupid foolish knee jerk extremist...that happens to think allowing millions of criminals to flood across the border and then reward them with coveted citizenship status is a bad thing...

They would deport themselves in a few months if the jobs dried up. HR 4437, the bill they are so worked up about, has tough sanctions on employers and provisions for streamlined ID/documentation verification. The databases are already in place. It also includes safeguards for employers if the gov. verifies a SS# or Green Card but the employee later turns out to be an illegal.
It is interesting to note that the provision in 4437 that they call racist (making illegal entry a felony) was inserted by Dems a short time ago. It wasn't in the original version. Also interesting that Hitlery just happened to jump on "immigration reform" as a Republican evil that "would make Jesus a criminal" a mere week before the protests.
And interesting just how organized the protests were. Tens of thousands of T-shirts, thousands of professional signs and weeks of advertising on Spanish language radio and TV stations. Interesting that the orgs behind the organisation were mostly socialist activists and some Arab/Islamic orgs. Here's an example of advertising for a protest this Friday. Notice the names of the orgs on the bottom left of the poster. Those are Latino commie front orgs.
My question is:
Why aren't the dems that want border enforcement standing up, and telling their party they want it? Hell, I know we won't agree with them on many things, but a significant amount of dems do want it...and the majority of their representive just flat out reject securing the border.
It's a real mistake to talk about a hispanic vote. Any hispanic who can legally vote is in the U.S. legally, and may take as dim, or even dimmer, a view, of illegal immigration as the next guy.
The word "hispanic" has got to be one of the all-time dumbest media inventions ever, btw, but that's another subject.
A friend of mine, a hispanic who is here legally, once said of illegal aliens: "F*** 'em. They're illegal. Do you know how many people want to come here legally?"
We have to start building the wall of America. And it will take us decades to assimiliate those who are already here.
That's exactly what I am wondering and is what wasn't addressed in this article: what percentage of legal American voters of Hispanic origin are for illegal immigration? And want an amnesty program for illegal immigrants already in the U.S.?
Probably not a lot, or we would be seeing about 10 polls from the MSM showing it. I smell a Rat.
I doubt it. Many are Catholic. Many more follow superstitious practices that are definately not Christian. Christians would not steal across a border they know they are not allowed to cross, steal services such as welfare, health care, education, food stamps, etc., and steal jobs. Many people in prisons consider themselves Christian too. Some are, others are not. Just calling yourself Christian does not automatically make you one. I can sit in my garage and call myself a Chevrolet, but that doesn't make me one.
