Officer Leaves Gun In Bathroom Before Cheney Event

BOCA RATON, Fla. -- A Boca Raton police officer left her handgun in a public bathroom at a resort shortly before Vice President Dick Cheney arrived for a fundraiser.

Authorities found the loaded pistol while making a security sweep of the Boca Raton Resort & Club on March 6. The gun belonged to Sgt. Nicole Girardi, who was reprimanded by her supervisor, Capt. Matthew Duggan.

"Upon return of the sidearm, you assumed full responsibility for the event and in doing so recognizing the gravity of the issue," Duggan wrote in a letter about the incident placed in Girardi's personnel file. Duggan noted that a similar mistake in the future could cost Girardi her job.

Secret Service spokesman Steve Caruso said the agency was aware of the incident but declined to comment further, adding that it was resolved before Cheney arrived.

Cheney spoke to a crowd of Republicans at a fundraiser for U.S. Rep. Clay Shaw.

Girardi received no punishment for the incident other than a reprimand, Boca Raton Sgt. Jeff Kelly said Tuesday. Copyright 2006 by The Associated Press. All rights reserved. This

Why does an officer EVER need to remove a handgun from its holster while using the bathroom?

You know...this sounds much more serios to me. What is the background of this officer? Her leaningns? Who deos she know that may have been at the event or in the building?

I hope this gets a much more thorough review and investigation than this letter of reprimand.

You can't fire her, she's a woman. So, by default, anything she does wrong is somehow the fault of white males.

Anyone ever try to sit and pee with a side-arm holstered to your belt? She's a "setter" not a "pointer." ;)

What an idiot. She should be fired. And then thoroughly interrogated. Who knows? Maybe it was left there on purpose for someone else to pick up?

Amazingly, not EVERYONE loves Dick Cheney. (Well, not like I do, anyway...)

Hey, when you gotta go, ya gotta go.

Lets see, lipstick, hair, handcuffs, baton, eyeliner, pepper spray, radio, check.

Hey, I feel like I lost 10 lbs!

All that equipment hanging on the belt weighs it down. When you unbuckle the belt to..um..do your business..the belt slips out of a bunch of loops and ends up on the floor.

At least that's what happens to me with pagers and cellphones on my belt. Gotta think it's the same for police officers with all the stuff they carry.

Well, at least it doesn't appear that the gun was taped to the bottom of the sink or anything like that. And with the weapon being immediately traceable to the officer (not like a "throw-down") it wouldn't seem to be anything other than sheer unforgivable negligence.

Thinking the same thing.

Maybe she kept her lipstick in the barrel for safe keeping.

And hand sanitizer in the holster.

Union won't allow it. Remember, police no longer care about the citizen - it is all about the Benjamins and yes, I know the cops will now start flaming me.

/flame suit on...
