Boehner hints a back down on 'amnesty'
The Washington Times ^ | March 29, 2006 | Charles hurt

"Let's wait and see what the Senate can produce," he told reporters yesterday when asked whether House Republicans would reject the Senate Judiciary Committee's proposal to allow the estimated 12 million illegal aliens now in the U.S. to seek citizenship after paying a fine.

Coop, you flatly refused on the first effort.

Why yes! Didn't you hear the despair in our old-timer Skeeter's voice when discussing my emotional breakdown? It's just breakin' his heart.

The logistics of the deportation option are completely infeasible.

Sorry for the long delay in answering your excellent post--real life keeps interfering with my FReeping.

I understand and agree with your argument about the impossibility of finding/processing/deporting all illegal immigrants.

What I propose is that SOME of them be deported--as many as possible without creating the problems you mention. The purpose would be to send a message to all current and would-be illegals that it's becoming more difficult to get here and stay here illegally. I think that would be worth doing. And the cost involved could perhaps be balanced by the money saved in providing these people with free primary education, health care, and other handouts provided by taxing citizens and legal immigrants.

"Believe it - the prospect of starving to death in a fortnight serves wonderfully to concentrate the work ethic!"

If you've looked into just how tenuous our wonderful, just-in-time supply chain will be, in the event of a large scale natural disaster, major terrorist attack or all-out war, you know just how prescient that quote actually is.

I don't even need to go that far: I have experience in these matters, having graduated from a good university in 1992 with no highly valuable degree (Classical History with a molecular biology minor? please...) and the taint of being "over-qualified" for most non-specialist positions. I made my living as a dockworker and construction worker out of necessity in those years.

That's pretty uninformed.

Yes: Dubya has done some things to somewhat stem the tide.
No: Dubya has NOT done everything within his legitimate powers, nor has what he has done been enough.
