Boehner hints a back down on 'amnesty'
The Washington Times ^ | March 29, 2006 | Charles hurt

Posted on 03/29/2006 7:15:28 AM PST by surely_you_jest

House Majority Leader John A. Boehner refused yesterday to rule out compromising with the Senate to expand the House border security bill to include a guest-worker program or provisions that opponents call "amnesty." "Let's wait and see what the Senate can produce," he told reporters yesterday when asked whether House Republicans would reject the Senate Judiciary Committee's proposal to allow the estimated 12 million illegal aliens now in the U.S. to seek citizenship after paying a fine.

"Mexican officials have been critical of the House bill, particularly an amendment that calls for building nearly 700 miles of fence along the border. The Bush administration supported the House bill, but Mr. Bush told CNN Espanol yesterday that fencing off the [whole] border is "impractical."

And he's right. He's supporting the 700 mile fence in the House bill, but noting that we have thousands of miles of border (e.g. coastal) where such fencing would be impractical.

From Center for Immigration Studies, December 2005

The 35.2 million immigrants (legal and illegal) living in the country in March 2005 is the highest number ever recorded -- two and a half times the 13.5 million during the peak of the last great immigration wave in 1910.

Between January 2000 and March 2005, 7.9 million new immigrants (legal and illegal) settled in the country, making it the highest five-year period of immigration in American history.

Nearly half of post-2000 arrivals (3.7 million) are estimated to be illegal aliens.

I wonder how many other old timers are out there, totally disgusted with the way this place changed?

I don't remember FR ever being a pro-illegals website. What has changed?

I have browsed this forum for almost four years now. I never bothered to post because the anti-intellectual swarm of Bushbots would consistently stiffle debate. They haven't been been able to get away with it this time, though. They can't hide the stink of this bag of **** amnesty plan.

JMO, you are stinking up the place with the big steamy pile above.

I noticed upthread that you mentioned the fence in the California sector.

A more pathetic fence it would be hard to imagine.

It's an open invitation to hide and climb.

Interesting findings at that link, thanks.
Asked whether they would favor "allowing illegal immigrants already working in the United States to register as guest workers for a fixed period of time, so that the government could keep track of them," 73% said they "favor"; 23% said "oppose"; 3% don't know.

There is nothing impractical about fencing off the southern border. There is no engineering obstactle in such a task that we cannot overcome. The only thing lacking is political will. Neither Bush nor the Democrats nor the four RINOs who voted yesterday for amnesty have any desire to control illegal immigration.

The American people overwhelmingly want illegal immigration stopped cold and legal immigration reduced. Unfortunately, our government increasingly listens only to elite opinion, and elite opinion is overwhelmingly in favor of mass immigration.

"as guest workers for a fixed period of time"

For a fixed period of time. Not a path to citizenship in the bill supported by Harry Reid, the democrats on the senate judiciary committee, Sam Brownback, Mike DeWine, John McCain, Lindsey Graham and president Bush.
