Corzine the Canary
Wall Street Journal ^ | 3/29/06

Posted on 03/29/2006 6:30:30 AM PST by mathprof

Jon Corzine, New Jersey's new Governor, isn't the first politician not to follow through on a campaign promise. But rarely is such dishonesty later presented as a virtue. The question for voters to contemplate is whether this is also an indication of what to expect if Democrats gain control of Congress in November.

Mr. Corzine won the Trenton statehouse last year by running as a tax cutter who'd raise property tax rebates by 40% over four years. "I'm not considering raising taxes. It's not on my agenda. We have a very high-rate tax structure. I'm not considering it," the then-U.S. Senator had vowed in October.

Well, last week Governor Corzine removed the Steve Forbes mask and submitted a record $30.9 billion budget that increases state spending by 9% and includes $1.5 billion in new levies. He wants to raise the already high state sales tax by 16% and extend it to services; hike taxes on cigarettes, alcohol and expensive cars; and create a new state water tax. And just so Garden State entrepreneurs don't feel left out, his budget would impose a corporate tax surcharge and a commercial property transfer tax. "There are no immediate plans," joked one local paper, "to tax the air we breathe--not this year, at least."

[snip]

And now Democrats on Capitol Hill are promising they'll also cut taxes if they're elected to run Congress next year. Republicans have certainly given Democrats an opening by their failure to govern. But voters who might otherwise choose Democrats for a change might think twice if they conclude that Mr. Corzine is the canary in the coal mine of real Democratic tax intentions.

Meanwhile, Corzine's promises to stop the corruption in N.J. have faded in the night.

He appointed a freaking scofflaw without outstanding warrants as the state’s Attorney General – in charge of enforcing the laws!

Then he turned all the corruption investigations over to her.

A man who called the first President Bush a liar for raising taxes suddenly becomes a hero for raising taxes? >>

yep, the press loves to twist things around. in fact, the stain maker increased taxes over $1 trillion and nothing was said. In 1993 the taxes increased by $260 billion and the money kept coming in for the remainder of his two terms and bush's first. I think it was 2nd only to FDR's tax increase in 1942 to fund the war and his voluminous social programs.

without outstanding warrants

Should be "with outstanding warrants."

I twiced "out" twice, after reading the speculation about Corzine's sexuality.

The media is our enemy. They shape public opinion at every turn. However, I believe that Corzine is going to have a rough ride for some time when the increases are instituted.

Raising the sales tax is going to hurt everyone.

Property tax increases across the board, including some Abbott districts, will add to the anger.

THE BUSINESS OF TERRORISM

(snip)

>>>In 2001, the Financial Action Task Force identified the following major sources of terrorist funding:

- Extortion and kidnapping<<

(snip)

>>>Private individuals have continued to donate money, either because they believe in the cause or to avoid unpleasant consequences [ie protection money]. This may well be the single largest source of funding for the movement and needs to be addressed. Such individuals will need to be guaranteed protection if they are both to come forward and give an account of the moneys passed to al Qaida and to feel safe enough to discontinue paying. Some of these people are victims of extortion, not necessarily zealots. <<<<

The IRV Victory Fund
The Vision
As recent events have shown, instant runoff voting (IRV) is gaining traction nationwide. On the heels of San Francisco's city-wide IRV elections, hailed universally as well-understood by the electorate (and much preferred to the old system), other cities have begun to follow the trend. In March, Burlington, Vt. became the first major city in more than 30 years to use IRV for a mayoral election, and the positive results bode well for the possibility of this good-government reform to spread statewide.

As passionate electoral reformers who believe in the people's power to protect our country's democratic health, the challenge is presenting these victories as part of what they truly are -- a nationwide movement. In that spirit, FairVote is launching the IRV Victory Fund, which aims to unify local efforts by aiding those campaigns where the promise of success is greatest.

Fueling a National Movement.
The Victory Fund pledges at least 50 cents for every dollar it collects to be directed to the local campaign where it will count the most. Though the eventual goal of IRV should be to ensure the principle of majority rule is honored everywhere, and used for all executive offices, right now the reformer's strategy must focus on city and state campaigns. Of course, FairVote will continue to produce educational and campaign materials for national use.

The Fund will operate with complete transparency in periodic reports as to how these campaign-focused donations are spent. That's just another prerequisite for establishing an IRV campaign in which all its participants can feel involved.

A Vehicle for Endorsements
From Sens. John McCain and Barack Obama, to DNC Chairman Howard Dean, big names are lining up behind instant runoff voting as it gains momentum. The Victory Fund serves as a focus point for prominent figures, and provides a basis to campaign for endorsements from other supporters of fair elections. Seeking these endorsements will be central to the Victory Fund's operation.
