Jon Corzine, New Jersey's new Governor, isn't the first politician not to follow through on a campaign promise. But rarely is such dishonesty later presented as a virtue. The question for voters to contemplate is whether this is also an indication of what to expect if Democrats gain control of Congress in November.
Mr. Corzine won the Trenton statehouse last year by running as a tax cutter who'd raise property tax rebates by 40% over four years. "I'm not considering raising taxes. It's not on my agenda. We have a very high-rate tax structure. I'm not considering it," the then-U.S. Senator had vowed in October.
Well, last week Governor Corzine removed the Steve Forbes mask and submitted a record $30.9 billion budget that increases state spending by 9% and includes $1.5 billion in new levies. He wants to raise the already high state sales tax by 16% and extend it to services; hike taxes on cigarettes, alcohol and expensive cars; and create a new state water tax. And just so Garden State entrepreneurs don't feel left out, his budget would impose a corporate tax surcharge and a commercial property transfer tax. "There are no immediate plans," joked one local paper, "to tax the air we breathe--not this year, at least."
[snip]
And now Democrats on Capitol Hill are promising they'll also cut taxes if they're elected to run Congress next year. Republicans have certainly given Democrats an opening by their failure to govern. But voters who might otherwise choose Democrats for a change might think twice if they conclude that Mr. Corzine is the canary in the coal mine of real Democratic tax intentions.

You forgot the hospital bed tax Corsize want to institue. $620 for each bed a hospital has.
Viking Yachts was one of them as I recall. Are they back now?
Did you hear the news this morning?
Not only are the property taxes going to be reevaluated for home costs....
BUT, the Mayors have realized the new State Budget is stiffing local expenses.
WHAT the heck ever happened with the voter rolls review?
home costs....
would make more sense as home VALUE
How can you squeeze so many tax increases in just one bill?
This reads like a satire of a Democratic platform.
If I recall Viking did not close up but cut down on their crew lines.
I guess Corzine does not want to bleed us to death drip by drip. We are going to go by massive blood loss
"Of course he lied. He's a democrat."
And of course New Jersey voters are dumb enough not to figure that out. Serves em' right.
Problem is, the dumb voters are dead and don't pay taxes.
A reasonal person might think so, but most voters never use the thought process, they just "pull the donkey," at least they do in the blue states.
Maybe, but apparently there are enough dimocrats in NJ to:
A. Elect this twit because they believed him.
B. Really wanted to pay more taxes and knew he was just "foolin'" when he said he would not raise taxes.
A full voter poll purge still hasn't been completed.
But, in just an overview of 21 counties found:
- 4,397 were registered and voted in more than one county
- 6,572 were registered in more than one county AND more than one state and voted in all
- 4,755 were deceased, NOT registered and yet voted
- 13,440 are deceased and STILL registered
Can you imagine what a full purge of our state voter polls will show??
How courageous.
And the Republicans promised limited government. Same old crap from both Big Stupid Government parties. Sleazy lying bastards, all of them.
However, in NJ, anything is possible and the republicans may very well fail to capitalize on Corzine's lies.
See my post #36. I mentioned hospital bed tax.
Yes the RAT voters here in NJ are dumb, but equal blame should go to the so-called conservatives who refuse to support Republican candidates. It's just stupid then to expect that we'd end up with anything else but a lying RAT.
Your tagline caught my curiosity, and I have to ask: How is South Jersey a "secret state"?
I know one that's an open secret in Bergen County.
Did you ever see that email I was referring to? Bergen Cty person was on it.
Do you think the email was true?
