The Beatles' smoking habit snubbed out
LIFE STYLE EXTRA ^ | Tuesday, 28th March 2006

LIFE STYLE EXTRA (UK) - Record bosses are erasing any evidence of The Beatles penchant for smoking from the cover of an album re-release.

EMI are shipping a new version of LP 'Capitol Albums Volume 2' on April 3, but there will be a distinctive difference on the cover.

While John, Paul and Ringo were seen puffing away on the evil weed on the original 1964 version, they've magically kicked the habit on the re-release. And that's not the only thing to have vanished into thin air, two of Ringo's fingers, that were holding a cigarette, have also gone on the missing list.

The band were all big smokers, with John still smoking when he was shot dead in 1980.

Paul is believed to have quit in the 80s, but his wife Heather Mills recently revealed he was still smoking marijuana until former wife Linda McCartney died in 1998.

She said "I would not get married to him if he was taking drugs."

Cigarettes Erased Off Beatles Album Cover
In a controversial move...

By: Scott Colothan on

In a controversial move, record company bosses have decided to erase the cigarettes off the front cover of a Beatles album.

Compilation ‘Capitol Albums Volume 2’ gets its re-release on April 3, but the new cover (pictured above) will be devoid of cigarettes in the fab four’s hands.

The move reflects the societies growing condemnation of cigarettes over health issues.

It’s not the first time a label has erased cigarettes from a Beatles cover. In the mid eighties when ‘I Wanna Hold Your Hand’ was re-released by EMI in America, Paul’s cigarette was removed from the frame.

It remains to be seen whether albums by the likes of the Arctic Monkeys will be affected in future years. Story taken from Entertainmentwise www.entertainmentwise.com/news?id=15119

It's so stupid the word "controversial" simply doesn't apply.

I wonder what they are going to do to the Cheech and Chong albums.I thought all the anti smoking goons were here in the states. Oh well, revision history rearing it's ugly head. Didn't they change the movie "ET" were they no longer had guns in the movie.

Just like remakes or re-releases of anything showing the Manhattan skyline. No WTC in there. The FBI officers in E.T. used to hold guns, but now they hold flashlights. And worst of all, in Star Wars, Greedo now shoots at Han Solo first in the cantina.

Okay, let's get the fattening, artery-hardening, abusive to animals food product (whipped cream) out of this one.

Fair is fair.

No. No! NO!!! Han shot first, and that will always be the case!

Nothing new. They did it when the Beatles were popular.

I had a Beatles 3-ring binder with the guys on the cover, no cigarettes. It was very obvious that the picture had been doctored because there were blank spaces in between their fingers and their hands were sort of posed, as if there was something in them.

I had the same picture on a Beatles trading card and they were holding cigarettes.
