Freeper Canteen, Canteen Kids March 29, 2006 What I learned from the DARE Program
March 29, 2006

Posted on 03/28/2006 6:03:10 PM PST by Kidlett CLR

I am a DARE GRADUATE

Dare means: Drug Abuse Resistance Education

Click here for the Official D.A.R.E. Website

The program taught me

Ten Things Kids Can Do To Stop Violence

Settle arguments with words, not fists or weapons. Don't stand around and form an audience when others are arguing. A group makes a good target for violence.
Learn safe routes for walking in the neighborhood, and know good places to seek help. Trust feelings, and if there's a sense of danger, get away fast.
Report crimes or suspicious actions to the police, school authorities, and parents. Be willing to testify if needed.
Don't open the door to anyone that you don't know and trust.
Never go anywhere with someone you don't know and trust.
If someone tries to abuse you, say no, get away, and tell a trusted adult. Remember, it's not the victim's fault.
Don't use alcohol or other drugs, and stay away from places and people associated with them.
Stick with friends who are also against violence and drugs, and stay away from known trouble spots.
Get involved to make school safer and better-having poster contests against violence, holding anti-drug rallies, counseling peers, settling disputes peacefully. If there's no program, help start one.
Help younger children learn to avoid being crime victims. Set a good example, and volunteer to help with community efforts to stop crime.

There are some really cool D.A.R.E. cars.

DID YOU KNOW?

Smoking accounts for one-third of all heart disease deaths?
The two most damaging chemicals found in cigarettes are tar and nicotine? The major cancer-causing chemical in tobacco smoke is tar, and nicotine is as addictive as heroin or cocaine.
The risk of developing cancer is 10 times greater for smokers than for nonsmokers. That's what you call a bad risk!
Smoking causes 85 percent of all lung cancer deaths, and lung cancer is the No. 1 killer in women?
People who smoke one pack of cigarettes a day decrease their life expectancy by about six years?
Tobacco companies spend over $3 billion every year on advertisements that glamorize smoking?
Smoking hurts your lungs and can cause respiratory conditions such as emphysema, bronchitis, chronic coughs, and a sore throat. Smoking makes it hard for a person to breathe.
Tobacco companies need to recruit 1,200 new smokers every day to replace those who have died.

Hugs are the order of the day!

She plants philodendron, rubber trees, spider plants, mother-in-law's tongue, Christmas Cactus, whatever...I don't know the names of most of the plants. I just know they're green and they grow.

She has a way with them, she talks to them, y'know? Typical conversation goes something like, "Well look at you...need a drink?...not doing too well, I see...that's okay, I don't care...if you live, fine, and if not, there's the garbage can. I can always replace you!"

I thank God she doesn't take that attitude with me!!

Welcome to the Canteen, HungarianGypsy, where we honor our troops, our veterans, their families, and our allies every day. We are here 24(mostly)/7/365 to provide a place for our military to stop in, pull up a chair, and enjoy a joke, hear a song (requests taken), read some history, enjoy a cyber meal (no calories), hear about our families lives, join in the silliness, and just relax. Glad you stopped in.

The no more bone on bone thing is wonderful. All the pain is in the muscles above and below the knee, they have to be totally retrained after surgery.

Thanks for caring...it means a lot.

School lunch: A baby squirrel nurses on milk from a syringe at Stroudsburg High School in Pennsylvania's Poconos. Kathy Uhler, a teacher who also runs Pocono Wildlife Rehabilitation Center, takes the little rodent and 18 other abandoned squirrels, all about 2 weeks old, to class in order to care for them. The squirrels need to be fed around the clock.

Balled tires: El Diablo, a.k.a. Didi Senft, climbs a giant tricycle that sports tires made out of more than 100 soccer balls in Storkow, Germany. Senft built the trike to promote the 2006 Football World Cup.

Hummers can be vicious little things.

We have had feeders for them, but had to put them away. The hummers would sip at them during the day and evening, but the Long-Nosed Mexican Fruit Bats would drain them overnight...and leave a nasty mess all over the porch in the process!
