[Mexican President] Fox wants Canada to accept more 'guest workers'

Mexican President Vincente Fox wants Canada to consider opening its doors to more unskilled Mexican workers to deal with a looming labour shortage.

Fox told The Globe and Mail in an exclusive interview that Canada should greatly expand its current temporary work program for agricultural workers from Mexico.

Canadian farms are allowed to recruit foreign workers under the Seasonal Agricultural Workers Program, as long as they can't find Canadians to harvest their crops.

Fox said he wants that agreement expanded to include plant nurseries, construction, restaurants services and golf courses to deal with labour shortages from Canada's aging population.

He said Mexican workers should be able to sign up with Canadian employers for specific time periods. It's not clear how long he is suggesting, but presumably it would be longer than for migrant farm workers.

About 7,000 Mexican workers came to farms in Ontario last year. Many of them worked in Leamington, Ont., where the Mexican government has now set up a consulate.

Fox granted the interview to The Globe ahead of a summit this week in Cancun with Prime Minister Stephen Harper and U.S. President George Bush.

The Mexican president is already backing a large-scale "guest worker" program in the United States, where the immigrant issue has heated up over the past few days.

On Monday, the Senate Judiciary Committee approved legislation that clears the way for illegal aliens in the country to apply for U.S. citizenship without first having to return home.

It also approved a new temporary program allowing entry for 1.5 million workers seeking jobs in the agriculture industry

As well, the committee voted down proposed criminal penalties on immigrants to be found illegally in the country.

Over the weekend and on Monday, hundreds of thousands of people rallied in Los Angeles and other U.S. cities demanding Congress abandon legislation passed in the House that would make being an undocumented immigrant a felony.

Look out, Canada, Fox has YOU on his radar and wants to dump more of his prized workforce on YOUR doorstep for free.

So far, the US has managed to keep the cost of all Fox's free prized workforce down to a few billion dollars per year in health and social services costs; not to mention the added costs in crime, drug abuse, and downgrading the school system to accommodate people who are too lazy and ignorant to learn English (or French in Quebec).

Y'all have fun with this - we certainly haven't!!

Um......where is the logic behind a country's leader pimping out his citizens to other countries?

He's not exporting those in his class, the Castillian Spanish.

He just wants to get rid of everyone else.

If you have ever travelled to Mexico you would understand why he wants to get rid of them. They are reproducing like rabbits in a country with no jobs.

Fox wants a whole lot from other countries but is not willing to do the reforms to his own country to insure the Mexican citizens have the opportunity to prosper.

Fox is a BAD MAN!

Why is depopulating Mexico and every other country south of the Rio Grande such a good idea? Answer: it's not.

Goodness.. not good. Over here we are new to immigration (as opposed to emigration LOL), the migration pump switched polarity in the late '90s, still it id frightening to see the statistics - I don't have ethnic or cultural figures at hand, but I have a rough figure from memory about the religious breakdown in Ireland - Ireland was 95% Catholic ten years ago, it's now 85%(?), such a rapid change couldn't all be blamed on a secular trend in this country, it means basically a huge rise in immigration here in ten years.

With a 6.4% unemployment rate why would we wish to import workers?

Half of Mexico is already here and the other half is packing to move north. The middle and upper classes want out, too.

...he wants to ship them out.

Hey, I hear they need some help in Iraq to clean up the country. I'm sure they could use some day laborers there.

I thought that was the plan.

Fox is a piece of crap. This guy wants to send his own people to other countries to, "bring home the bacon". However, not one word on why so many people are leaving his own country. How come no politician calls on Fox to fix his problems at home instead of sending his people abroad?
