NORFOLK The Navy will send an aircraft carrier strike group, with four ships, a 60-plane air wing and 6,500 sailors, to Caribbean and South American waters for a major training exercise, it was announced Monday.
Some defense analysts suggested that the unusual two-month-long deployment, set to begin in early April, could be interpreted as a show of force by anti-American governments in Venezuela and Cuba.
The presence of a U.S. carrier task force in the Caribbean will definitely be interpreted as some sort of signal by the governments of Cuba and Venezuela, said Loren Thompson of the Lexington Institute, a pro-defense think tank in Washington.

They don't call an aircraft carrier 98,000 tons of diplomacy for nothing. Just too bad it isn't the "Big Stick" as the USS Theodore Roosevelt is called.

We certainly wouldn't want one of those Venezuelan Mig-29s to get lost and head towards our battlegroup, now would we?
That would be a real shame........

Yeah, that would be a shame.
It sure would be a shame if Venezuela's navy was cauuught up to nefarious activity, too. And Cuba.

We have a navy base in Cuba, I don't think a carrier will be that big of a deal. Might be a signal to Argentina, who recently is making noise about the Fauklands again.

Maybe we'll have a chance to put Chavez in his place, like we did (multiple times) with Kadaffi.
BTW, I was there (off the coast of Libya) on the Nimitz when the first two planes were shot down, and on the JFK when the last two were splashed.

I was referring to Teddy Roosevelt's form of diplomacy, i.e. "Speak softly and carry a big stick."
The one thing I remember Washington saying was a warning about becoming involved in the "broils of Eurpoe."

Maybe heading off some miscellaneous shipments of "baby milk powder" and "maternity clothing" from Iran.
