March 28, 2006--In his bid for re-election, Virginia Senator George Allen (R) now leads businessman Harris Miller (D) by 29 percentage points, 56% to 27%. The latest Rasmussen Reports election poll in the race also shows Allen leading former Navy secretary James Webb by 24 percentage points, 54% to 30%.
Neither challenger has come within single digits thus far in the campaign, but Allen's fortunes have bobbed a bit.
In early December, with no Democrat challenger yet formally announcing a run, Allen enjoyed a very comfortable lead over each of four possibilities when voters were asked about prospective match-ups. At the time, he led Webb by 31 points.
When Miller first entered the race in early January, Allen led him by 30 points. By early February, following media coverage of both Democrats entry into the race, Allen had dipped below 50% support and was leading his two declared opponents by 12 and 13 percentage points.
It may be that the Democrats' throwing their hats into the ring generated initial excitement that was too thin to last. It could also be that the February drop in Allen's numbers was just statistical noise. Most likely, both factors played a role in the apparent tightening shown in the February results.
Sixty-nine percent (69%) of all voters view Allen favorably. Only 24% view Miller favorably, and only 30% view Webb favorably. Thirty-five percent (35%) of voters have no opinion one way or the other about Miller and Webb.
Thirty-nine percent (39%) of Virginia voters favor a ban on abortion except in the case of danger to the life of the mother, of the sort now being vetted in South Dakota; 52% oppose such a ban. Fifty-two percent (52%) also oppose public funding of election campaigns.

IMNSHO.... I'm liking it more and more every day.
Allen bump -- the best of the lot for sure.
Condi Rice would make a great VP candidate with Allen.
Yeah, President Allen is the best of the crop I've seen so far. Hope nothing derails him. He's doing real good at staying below the radar -- some people are fretting about that, but at this point its probably fine to let McVain be the front runner -- front runners never win and I think the Amurrikin Pipple are sick of politics as usual. Besides, McCrazy has taken such weird positions, and then there is the whole "songbird" thing. I don't think he's going to get too far, I hope not because he'll get Kerry'd in the GE as the truth comes out. McPain is just not likeable.
Senator Allen ping.
Let's make it past this November before worrying about that, okay? :-)
What's the "songbird" story?
I really hate to see Allen running for the Senate again. If he had retired his seat to concentrate on his Presidential run as Dole did, he could have allowed the GOP the possibility of retaining his seat. By remaining in the Senate, he opens himself up to the same criticisms that plagued Kerry.
In my dreams and predictions! Allen/Rice '08
Sent Allen money some time ago and plan to do more. It's my understanding that he can keep what money he has left for a future election...is this correct? Hitlary is building up her "WAR CHEST" but also spending $100,000 a month on a huge staff...excuse me but does she need all of those people to win the Senate seat in '06 where she's showing a 67% approval rating...let's help Allen NOW!
Good news.
Yeah, that Dole thing worked out really well for the GOP, didn't it?
We Virginians want Senator Allen to run again. If he goes on to win the White House, we'll deal with Governor Kaine naming his replacement. But we'll be electing a new Governor in 2009 anyway.
Allen/Rice would indeed be a good ticket. I also think All + a Midwesterner would be a winning ticket.
Allen is also a very good Vice President option for any non-Southerner who might get the nomination for President.
Dole lost because he was a weak RINO who had no executive experience. Allen is a strong conservative who does have experience. It is Allen's tenure as governor that will help get him elected in 2008. Another two years in the Senate will only hurt those chances. Also with Dole, when he stepped down, he was replaced by another Republican. When Allen steps down in January 2009, he will be replaced with another Robb-like Democrat.
Agreed...any suggestions for a midwesterner you like and does that mean the midwesterner would be at the top and Allen VP?
Just let him pick Ken Blackwell as VP and BANG!!!!! the rat is done for.

This will bring back some fond memories for democrats.
Bull Clinton
