Mexico cheers passage of immigration bill in Senate committee
Boston Herald ^ | March 28, 2006 | Associated Press

Mexicans cheered the proposal approved yesterday by the Senate Judiciary Committee to legalize undocumented migrants and provide temporary work visas, and credited huge marches of migrants across the United States as the decisive factor behind the vote.

Mexican President Vicente Fox said the vote was the result of five years of work dating to the start of his presidential term in 2000, and puts Mexico one step closer toward the government’s goal of “legalization for everyone” who works in the United States.

“My recognition and respect for all the Hispanics and all the Mexicans who have made their voice heard,” Fox said. “We saw them turn out this weekend all across the United States, and that’s going to count for a lot as we move forward.”

Some Mexican media outlets were even more euphoric, predicting final approval for the committee bill as drafted, and suggesting the weekend demonstrations showed Mexico still holds some sway over former territories which it lost in the 1846-48 Mexican-American War.

“With all due respect to Uncle Sam, this shows that Los Angeles has never stopped being ours,” reporter Alberto Tinoco said on the Televisa television network’s nightly news broadcast, referring to a Saturday march in Los Angeles that drew an estimated 500,000, mainly Mexicans.

But U.S. ambassador Tony Garza warned Mexicans yesterday that the proposal still faces a long, difficult path through Congress.

“The debate will no doubt be heated and at times contentious,” Garza wrote in an open letter distributed in Mexico City. “The debate in the Senate is only one part of the lengthy process.”

The bill is designed to strengthen enforcement of U.S. borders, regulate the flow into the country of so-called guest workers and determine the legal future of the estimated 11 million immigrants living in the United States illegally.

The bill would double the Border Patrol and authorizes a “virtual wall” of unmanned vehicles, cameras and sensors to monitor the U.S.-Mexico border. It also allows more visas for nurses and agriculture workers, and shelters humanitarian organizations from prosecution if they provide non-emergency assistance to illegal residents.

The most controversial provision would permit illegal aliens currently in the country to apply for citizenship without first having to return home, a process that would take at least six years.

Fox has been pushing for a migration accord that would grant some form of legal status to many of the estimated 6 million undocumented Mexicans in the United States. He is likely to bring up the topic when he meets with President Bush starting Thursday in Cancun.

Although a bill granting amnesty to illegal immigrants is unlikely to be approved by Congress, Fox remains hopeful that at least a guest-worker program will be put in place before he leaves office on Dec. 1.

If the United States approves such a program, it would bolster Fox’s image and aid the prospects of Felipe Calderon, presidential candidate for Fox’s National Action Party, or PAN, said George Grayson, a Mexico expert at the College of William & Mary.

“Fox is looking for some way to be remembered in history,” Grayson said.

Illegal migration has emerged as a significant issue in the campaigns of Mexico’s three major presidential hopefuls for the July 2 elections, and the United States has asked Mexico to do more to strengthen security along their common border.

I agree. But what happened to the Americans that can help do that.Seems like they have all turned into yes men and are complacent.

I'm discouraged but stand ready.

Yes, that one. I saw him on TV saying he was moved to go for citizenship after 9/11, but the process is still bogged down. Since I posted that I went to the eye doc and read an article about an Indian entrepreneur who owns a biz in Ann Arbor and has been cooling his heels in Mumbai while customs delays processing a visa for 6 months. Guess what? While in Mumbai he has made contacts and will now outsource part of his biz to India. My point is that I think the LEGAL part of ICE must be about as good as the Drivers License Bureau. I would not go so far as to argue that that justifies invasion, but I do think it explains some lapsed visas. Sen Cornyn's bill calls for 10,000 new hires to process guest workers paperwork.

Here's an interesting stat I saw for referance. There are 9 million passenger trips per year on American airlines. Oh, I know, get a horse. LOL

This is what happens when you let citizens of another country come in, and there is no requirement for them to learn your language. The reason illegals and their supporters could put all this together under the radar is because they organized it all on Spanish radio and television. Few English speakers listen to the Spanish radio or watch Spanish TV.

Those of us who live on the border were not surprised. We have been trying to tell the country for years that there are many many more illegals than anyone realizes, that they are not assimilating, that they are trying to reconquer the Southwest, they believe it is their land. No one would listen. If they had listened instead of accusing us of being racists, no one would have been surprised. I hope people are listening now, because the hour is really late and a solution needs to be found. A major fence/barrier should be being built as we speak.

We are not in the corner yet, but if drastic steps are not taken we soon might be. Mexican War II is starting and the US is late to the party.

The very first thing we need to do is stop the flood of new illegals that are coming in every single day by the droves. We need to get a major fence/barrier up on the border ASAP. Then we can figure out how best to deal with the illegals already here. If we enforce the laws now on the books regarding employment many would return to Mexico on their own. We basically need to stop catering to them and give them no privledges in this country.
We would then, and only then need to determine if we needed workers from other countries and if so how many. If we need workers we can then set up a program to deal with LEGAL workers from other countries.

Ridiculous rant with equally ridiculous assumptions and comparisons.

Glib tripe, demonstrating a refusal and/or inability to counter any of my points.

To-wit, for the record:

This is NOT rocket science.

To not grasp the obvious, is to create the impression that one wants to keep the invaders here, and is looking for any convenient pretext to rationalize it, because it might not be real popular to simply stand up and say, "Well, I like having the illegals here! They work cheap, and keep their mouths shut!"

The conclusion is left as an exercise for the reader.

As a LEGAL resident alien, who went through the system to live and work here, I had to undergo a medical examination to ensure that I was not bringing any disease with me.

What would happen with all these illegals. Will THEY have to line up for medicals or do they get a free pass because they broke the law?

Well, the beauty part of the scheme is that there's a subtitute for the route you took.

Instead of requiring Our New Citizens to BE healthy when they arrive here, we simply provide them unlimited free medical care, courtesy of the taxpayers.

See? There is often more than one way to solve a problem!

All of the various strategies to control the border or deport illegals mean nothing is our own government either lacks the will or actively works against our will.

It's not that they don't have the will to stop the invasion -- it's that they do have the will to support it.

There's the crux of the matter. Our Glorious Leaders WANT the invasion to continue, and they fully intend to see things through, to the point of no return (presuming we're not already there).

We need to replace too many of our own representatives as a first step.

Fat chance.

The game is pretty much rigged by, of, and for the incumbents. Why do you think they went to the mat to push CFR down the national throat?

Here's an interesting fact I saw for reference. We are talking about criminals, not tourists.

For all I care, "Sheriff Joe" can put 'em all in one big chain-gang and march 'em across the border.

If that's too much for your tender sensibilities, then stick 'em on a bus. Plenty of Americans travel by bus every year. If it's good enough for us, it's good enough for them.

For that matter, I imagine a railroad would carry a lot more than a bunch of busses. Let 'em build the tracks, then let 'em ride the trains back to Mexico.

Last Stop, May-hee-ko City, ALL OFF!

The problem is not one of ignorance.

The problem is one of agenda.

Those who call the shots do NOT want to stop the flow of illegals, because they benefit from the flow of illegals.

They're not stupid -- they realize this is not a popular position to take -- so, they feed us a diet of BS about how they're trying to come up with a plan...

Funny thing, though, how "the plan" always turns out to be a form of AMNESTY. And funny thing, they're smart enough to realize that "we the people" do NOT want an amnesty -- so, they simply slap a "This is NOT an Amnesty!" label on the amnesty plan!

Personal attack.

If you cannot discuss things rationally, if you have nothing to add to the discussion, then kindly refrain from slinging mud.

Unlike Don Joe and others, you have given this matter careful consideration. The first phase is to stop the influx.

The second phase will be more problematic. What do we do with the illegals that are already here? Round them up into internment camps as a prelude to deportation? I do not have an answer to that one. The only people that seem to have answers are the ones that have no responsibility nor accountability for the implementation of their plans.

I agree with you that Don Joe is a pompous ass. However, how am I wrong in asking what you do with all the illegals?Do you have a specific plan of action that can pass political and constitutional muster? I don't. Do you?

"Any time an illegal immigrant is stopped by the police or has any dealings with government officials and is found to be here illegally - send them back home."

First the law has to be changed to give the police that right to ask for proof they are here legally. As of now their hands are tied.

Now you are seeking help from the Mod. Good God.

What you need to do is to develop a comprehensive plan to deal with the illegals that are in this country. The plan must be able to pass political and constitutional muster.

If you can do that I shall retract my statement.
