WASHINGTON - The Senate Judiciary Committee approved election-year immigration legislation Monday that clears the way for millions of undocumented workers to seek U.S. citizenship without having to first leave the country.
After days of street demonstrations that stretched from California to the gounds of the U.S. Capitol, the committee also voted to strip out proposed criminal penalties for residents found to be in this country illegally.
The panel's vote cleared the way for the full Senate to begin debate Tuesday on the emotional immigration issue.
"All Americans wanted fairness and they got it this evening," said Sen. Edward M. Kennedy (news, bio, voting record), the Massachusetts Democrat who played a pivotal role in drafting the legislation, approved 12-6.
Committee Chairman Arlen Specter, R-Pa., voted for the bill but signaled that some of the provisions could well be changed by the full Senate.
In general, the bill is designed to strengtehn border patrol, create new opportunities for so-called guest workers and determine the legal future of the estimated 11 million immigrants living in the United States illegally.
At several critical popints, committee Democrats were united while Republicans splintered. In general, GOP Sens. Lindsay Graham of South Carolina, Sam Brownback of Kansas and Mike DeWine of Ohio, who is seeking re-election this fall, sided with Democrats.
That gave Democrats a majority that allowed them to shape the bill to their liking.

If my elected officials are doing a good job then I'll vote for them - if they are not then I won't. Just having an (R) next to their name isn't enough.

This visa will be issued without question to anyone in the world who wants to come to the USA and work in the media.
Foreign journalist are more than willing to come to America and do the jobs American journalist are unwilling to do.
It'll be good for immigrants, as they will have opportunities unavailable to them back in Canada, UK, NZ, Australia, Botswana, Ireland, or Zimbabwe.
Media companies will get well trained TV and Media personalities for a fraction of current costs.
H1-Ph.D Visa
If you are a teacher or school administrator anywhere on planet Earth, you can use this visa to come and work in the USA no questions asked.
Taxpayers will save money on education costs buy hiring less expensive foreign educators and administrators, and the American teachers will be freed from the terrible jobs they really don't want to do.
somehow I doubt the left establishment will rush out to support such a proposal....
I, for one, like the House bill HR 4437, which would tighten border enforcement and crack down on employers who hire undocumented workers. I think it should be supported, even though it won't send anyone back home, it will at least turn them into the FELONS their are.

Fine. Just don't come here complaining that your guy didn't make it.
In primaries, money is king. By your logic, no one should give any money to the Republican party or any candidate since "money doesn't win elections, votes do". Again, by your logic, Bush would have won in 2004 even if he didn't spend a dime on advertising.
Of course, money isn't the only factor in elections, but in primaries, the incumbent usually has a huge advantage not only in money but also in resources.
Just the simple thought of a bunch of illegals locking up the streets of an American city, so Americans can't even get to their jobs to pay for the illegals health care, send their kids to school, pay for the mothers social security while they have 10 kids (getting extra money for every one they have) makes me soooooo mad I can't even tell you.
I'm gonna blow the froth off a couple. I'm all worked up just talking about it.

I think they were sending us a message today when they made Sen. Brownback vote the way he did.

It's a [large] problem without consequence. It's a disagreement that doesn't result in loss of support. It's a political calculation that [hopefully] doesn't tip the balance away from GOP control of government.
I think we get the idea you're staying home on election day. Stop beating around the bush.
CFR, No Child Left Behind, Senior Prescription plan, no meaningful tax reform, deficit spending (even without military spending), total inaction on illegal immigration. The list goes on and on.
