WASHINGTON - The Senate Judiciary Committee approved election-year immigration legislation Monday that clears the way for millions of undocumented workers to seek U.S. citizenship without having to first leave the country.
After days of street demonstrations that stretched from California to the gounds of the U.S. Capitol, the committee also voted to strip out proposed criminal penalties for residents found to be in this country illegally.
The panel's vote cleared the way for the full Senate to begin debate Tuesday on the emotional immigration issue.
"All Americans wanted fairness and they got it this evening," said Sen. Edward M. Kennedy (news, bio, voting record), the Massachusetts Democrat who played a pivotal role in drafting the legislation, approved 12-6.
Committee Chairman Arlen Specter, R-Pa., voted for the bill but signaled that some of the provisions could well be changed by the full Senate.
In general, the bill is designed to strengtehn border patrol, create new opportunities for so-called guest workers and determine the legal future of the estimated 11 million immigrants living in the United States illegally.
At several critical popints, committee Democrats were united while Republicans splintered. In general, GOP Sens. Lindsay Graham of South Carolina, Sam Brownback of Kansas and Mike DeWine of Ohio, who is seeking re-election this fall, sided with Democrats.
That gave Democrats a majority that allowed them to shape the bill to their liking.
It's THAT huge, onyx.
In fact, Lincoln could have won the Civil War all by himself, if that statue of him sitting is true to scale.
You can attend a Spanish language Pentecostal service anywhere in Northern Virginia 24/7 ~ if you really wanted to do that.
Cast your posthumous vote for POTUS, Mo.
So, you don't care for capitalism? Please show me a specific link where ADM has "fixed" prices.
"I'm for a guest worker program, but they must leave the country and get in the back of the line for citizenship."
That's Kyl/Cornyn....
It is an outrage that a GOP committee passes out a Kennedy bill instead of a conservative bill.
Totally absurd.
GOOD to know. I was a mere 5 years old and vividly remember looking up at him and crying. That statue was HUGE in my mind. Thanks for telling me it really is HUGE.
"This is the snot-brained bastard who destroyed the nation's cultural integrity with his treasonous open door immigration bill forty years ago."
This what the media mean by "liberal icon" ...
a record of shame for 40 years.
And there you have it. The demand is just voracious. The chaps just have marketable skills. Mexican labor reached a tipping point where such skills were acquired, and then they had portability into the urban American industrial complex. It was not just about strawberries anymore.
Well if you pay taxes on any of that money you earned today, then you are paying for those illegal entrants.
The only states with fewer illegals are the Mexican states, and the only countries with fewer illegas are all but the US.
In all countries I know of, you can't work without papers, nor can you milk the system, etc.... just can't happen (if it does, it requires good fake papers, not what we have here).
So, fair blond younger female, sorry about your situation.
I am a grown-up, mature latin legal immigrant, and I know what you mean... that demeanor is one of the trademarks of the ignorant/uneducated, albeit hard-working, latin male. That is what they do, mostly when in the company of like-creatures.
There are few places you can move in the US where you won't find them, because this government has been inviting them, that I know of, since at least the 60's.
My best to you.
Spare me the anti capitalism nonsense.

It was all over the news. The FBI had them cold on video.
So now may we refer to him as Sam Brokeback?
LoL.. Hopefully..
Ewwww, gross! Didn't roosevelt I have a mechanical horse built for exercise?
Yes good for Frist glad the bill is dead. Also, the hopes of re-election of the 4 republicans that voted for this abortion should also be dead...whether they're up for re-election in 2006 or 2008.
Kennedy is hardly a mongrel ~ he's just purebred trash Fur Shur.
Don't put too much faith in Frist. If this bill fails, it will be because of the House.
Frist is just as bad as the rest.
Which is exactly what has happened every time, over the last 20 years, the issue has come up.
Exactly. Anyone who was thoroughly ticked today hasn't been paying attention to how Congress has dealt with the issue of immigration for the last 20 years.
The laws have been on the books, but so far, no one in power seems to want to enforce them, except a bunch in Congress out to confuse the whole issue with a broad range of silly mid-term election year face-saving half-hearted measures.
I think I'll sit out on this vote ;-D
