Senate Panel Approves Immigration Bill

WASHINGTON - The Senate Judiciary Committee approved election-year immigration legislation Monday that clears the way for millions of undocumented workers to seek U.S. citizenship without having to first leave the country.

After days of street demonstrations that stretched from California to the gounds of the U.S. Capitol, the committee also voted to strip out proposed criminal penalties for residents found to be in this country illegally.

The panel's vote cleared the way for the full Senate to begin debate Tuesday on the emotional immigration issue.

"All Americans wanted fairness and they got it this evening," said Sen. Edward M. Kennedy (news, bio, voting record), the Massachusetts Democrat who played a pivotal role in drafting the legislation, approved 12-6.

Committee Chairman Arlen Specter, R-Pa., voted for the bill but signaled that some of the provisions could well be changed by the full Senate.

In general, the bill is designed to strengtehn border patrol, create new opportunities for so-called guest workers and determine the legal future of the estimated 11 million immigrants living in the United States illegally.

At several critical popints, committee Democrats were united while Republicans splintered. In general, GOP Sens. Lindsay Graham of South Carolina, Sam Brownback of Kansas and Mike DeWine of Ohio, who is seeking re-election this fall, sided with Democrats.

That gave Democrats a majority that allowed them to shape the bill to their liking.

April 15th is coming up, I owe on my taxes. I only wish American taxpayers would pull a "tea party" on these illegals. I will not pay my taxes for the Senate who are a bunch of rich pansies, add my President along with that. You rich boys have no idea what the "voters" are going through. A Boston tea party is in order,

NO TAXATION WITHOUT REPRESENTATION!!!

I agree. I have made no secret of the fact that I think Bush is one of the worst Presidents in U.S. history.

Whew that has to go down as the definition, of a one issue bitter voter.

Trust me, I felt the same way this morning on my way to work. I feel as if we have absolutely NO leadership in the Oval Office anymore and also in the Senate. What's even worse is that a lot of Americans will care more about who wins the NCAA basketball tournament and the start of Major League Baseball next week than on our slowly fading country.

Should illegal immigrants be required to go home before becoming eligible for U.S. citizenship?

That is a slanted question. The question is basically asking the same thing. Should we give them citizenship, or make them go home and then make them citizens. The question doesn't even give the option of not giving them citizenship. Why should lawbreakers be given the opportunity to become citizens at all? Is that the kind of citizen we want here? The kind that has contempt for law? To give them citizenship would cheapen US Citizenship because it implies that American citizenship is no honor at all, but rather something cheap that is granted even to common criminals.

No, something will pass, because GWB will put the full court press on. It just won't be the Senate's weak livered version, than God.

It will, which means nothing will be passed this year on immigration. Nothing.

Which is exactly what has happened every time, over the last 20 years, the issue has come up.

And that's the way tancredo wants it, IMO.

He has too keep those PAC funds flowing for his only issue.

I think it sets up a very awkward precedent if the majority leader substitutes his personal will for the will of the appropriate committee.

Frist's "bill" won't get anywhere, or will be filibustered by Harry Reid.

Which means Frist will have to bring up the committee bill. He will be thoroughly embarrassed.

"The only Pubbie up for re-election is DeWine and his opponent is sherrod brown(i.e commie)."

Mr. Dewine's R status is meaningles. His vote here compared to the commie status of Brown is a distinction without a difference,

Vote the bast@#$s out!

What good is an R who screws his own. Same for Brownback and Gomer.

The rule of law is worthless when senators encourge, abet and aid those who are illegally entering our country.

What is this? Government of the illegal alien, for the illegal alien and by the illegal alien and screw anyone and everyone that is a citizen of the United States of America, particularly the hardworking, lawabiding taxpaying citizens.

I suggest to all these grandiose senators that voted for this scam too give all citizens a rebate for all of their ancestors who came to this country the lawful way.
