Senate Panel Approves Immigration Bill

WASHINGTON - The Senate Judiciary Committee approved election-year immigration legislation Monday that clears the way for millions of undocumented workers to seek U.S. citizenship without having to first leave the country.

After days of street demonstrations that stretched from California to the gounds of the U.S. Capitol, the committee also voted to strip out proposed criminal penalties for residents found to be in this country illegally.

The panel's vote cleared the way for the full Senate to begin debate Tuesday on the emotional immigration issue.

"All Americans wanted fairness and they got it this evening," said Sen. Edward M. Kennedy (news, bio, voting record), the Massachusetts Democrat who played a pivotal role in drafting the legislation, approved 12-6.

Committee Chairman Arlen Specter, R-Pa., voted for the bill but signaled that some of the provisions could well be changed by the full Senate.

In general, the bill is designed to strengtehn border patrol, create new opportunities for so-called guest workers and determine the legal future of the estimated 11 million immigrants living in the United States illegally.

At several critical popints, committee Democrats were united while Republicans splintered. In general, GOP Sens. Lindsay Graham of South Carolina, Sam Brownback of Kansas and Mike DeWine of Ohio, who is seeking re-election this fall, sided with Democrats.

That gave Democrats a majority that allowed them to shape the bill to their liking.

The sad part is that a lot of what he says is TRUE.
I voted for GB, and our Congress, expecting them to do the right thing on immigration. Here in Texas, you have reality. I look at illegal immigration EVERYDAY.

I live in Ohio. And I vote. Any suggestions on who I should write in to defeat DeWine?

And if he wins, do I simply hold my nose and push the touch screen for him, as opposed to that Demo-commie Sherrod Brown?

I am not advocating doing nothing, I am mearly pointing out the reason why the Republicans are so afraid to address this issue.

If it were up to me I'd deport them all and change the law so that children born here from illegal aliens are not automatically made citizens. I would also not allow them to attend public schools and would deny them all government benefits, and would threaten the states to do the same or risk loosing all federal funds. I would also build a wall similar to what Israel built along the entire border. And I'd also charge their home countries 10 thousand dollars for each one of their citizens we have to return to them that are here illegally.

There are hundreds of thousands of them in my fair city too but they are simply not the threat that is claimed of them. HERE taxes are not raised much by their presence, health services not overwhelmed, crime not much increased etc. But I can only speak about here. The impact in other places is greater no doubt.

And any successful solution requires SERIOUS thought as opposed to hystrionics. I have yet to hear a proposal which is do-able.

I would prefer something along the lines of citizen/militia type patrols under VERY capable leadership with immediate repatriation. This requires cooperation with the Mexican authorities.

It is the history of the world that the dominant powers attract people from the edges of that power. This goes for nations as well as cities and is, in fact, part of the process of generating and sustaining that power.

If you think the Mexican Authorities are going to cooperate...let me fill you in. THEY WON'T.

Right now my greatest concern about this issue is that is will be used against the GOP in order to assist the Party of Treason in regaining power. While the probability of any real successful dealing with this is low with the GOP it is ZERO with any regaining of RAT power. Who do you think is behind these demonstrations? Here it was RAT Senator Durbin, RAT Mayor Daley, RAT Rep. Guterrieze, RAT aldermen, RAT State politicos.

Come on this is TOO OBVIOUS.

Well, I worry about the DEMONCRATS myself, but if the GOP doesn't start listening to the will of the people, then they are going to reap what they sow......

It isn't a matter of listening to the will of the people it is a matter of prioritities and possibilities. This is not something that can be solved overnight. Any weakening of the GOP's power will only exerbate ALL of our problems.
