Senate Panel Approves Immigration Bill

WASHINGTON - The Senate Judiciary Committee approved election-year immigration legislation Monday that clears the way for millions of undocumented workers to seek U.S. citizenship without having to first leave the country.

After days of street demonstrations that stretched from California to the gounds of the U.S. Capitol, the committee also voted to strip out proposed criminal penalties for residents found to be in this country illegally.

The panel's vote cleared the way for the full Senate to begin debate Tuesday on the emotional immigration issue.

"All Americans wanted fairness and they got it this evening," said Sen. Edward M. Kennedy (news, bio, voting record), the Massachusetts Democrat who played a pivotal role in drafting the legislation, approved 12-6.

Committee Chairman Arlen Specter, R-Pa., voted for the bill but signaled that some of the provisions could well be changed by the full Senate.

In general, the bill is designed to strengtehn border patrol, create new opportunities for so-called guest workers and determine the legal future of the estimated 11 million immigrants living in the United States illegally.

At several critical popints, committee Democrats were united while Republicans splintered. In general, GOP Sens. Lindsay Graham of South Carolina, Sam Brownback of Kansas and Mike DeWine of Ohio, who is seeking re-election this fall, sided with Democrats.

That gave Democrats a majority that allowed them to shape the bill to their liking.

I just sent $200.00 to Sherrod Brown to help beat DeWine.

At least you're an open and honest Democrat.

Since we're discussing Lincoln's memorial......

My daughter went on the 11th grade trip to DC. They were touring the Lincoln memorial, the tour guide kept talking about the Lincoln memorial. It was the Lincoln memorial this, the Lincoln Memorial that. After the kids were done, they walked down the steps and were going to take pictures of the Lincoln memorial, the tour guide was taking group shots. One of the bimbo's, immediately after, walked down by my daughter and her friends and asked, 'who's that guy?'

Fast forward a year later. My middle daugher took the same tour. They happened to have the same tour guide. The same speil at the Lincoln Memorial. When the tour guide was done, she said, now, don't be like that bimbo from last year and ask who this guy is.

A side note, she was the same bimbo who wondered why the white house was still around after the movie 'Independence Day' blew it up.

I'll bet that tour guide is still talking about her.

The laws have been on the books, but so far, no one in power seems to want to enforce them, except a bunch in Congress out to confuse the whole issue with a broad range of silly mid-term election year face-saving half-hearted measures.

The House version was not at all just "face-saving half-hearted measures".

I predict Frist will substitute the Committee Bill for his. The Judiciary Committee considered and duly passed a bill. I think it sets up a very awkward precedent if the majority leader substitutes his personal will for the will of the appropriate committee.

Doubt it. Frist's bill will be filibustered by Reid and his gang of soft on crime goobers on the left.

1. A College rag is your "proof?" Buahahahaa
2. I see no indictment in your post. If there was a criminal finding, you need to point it out
3. Big deal. How is a farmer different than a 7-11 owner?

No, I would just rather support someone who admits what he is rather than support a piece of crap who claims to be conservative then sells the country out.

If DeWine is going to vote with the Democrats, why not replace him with someone honest enough to admit he's a Democrat? DeWine has to go as does every Republican who supports the criminals.

So you're proud of the job that the "conservatives" in the senate have done?

Should illegal immigrants be required to go home before becoming eligible for U.S. citizenship?

That's got to be the dumbest poll question I've ever seen.

I have never voted for a Democrat in my life.

Sherrod Brown will be the first.

Anyone who would blindly vote for a Democrat out of spite, instead of focusing attention on a reasonable and sound Republican is no true or principled conservative, let alone Republican.

LOL! No, I was 5 when I saw Lincoln's statue -- presuming of course it "is" Lincoln. I am still laughing about your daughter's classmate. That is such a great story! I love it.

"Should illegal immigrants be required to go home before becoming eligible for U.S. citizenship?"
The law as it stands is that YES, you can only be 'reclassified' if you entered here legally.
Some may be allowed to go to Canada, etc., but they have to leave first in order to make a 'legal' entry.
Of course, laws are 'flexible' so who knows where this will end up???
