Immigration Reform Markup
Sen. Arlen Spector (R-PA) chairs a full Judiciary Committee meeting to mark up pending legislation including a draft bill on comprehensive immigration overhaul. Also, the committee will vote on a bill to televise Supreme Court proceedings and judicial nominations to federal courts.
MON. ON C-SPAN AT 10AM ET
Truth be told, I think Frist prefers a bill come out of the Judiciary Committee. But the COmmittee's inability to reach concensus has frustrated the President, and Frist, to the point that Frist put an alternative "enforement only" bill on the Senate's calendar.
If you were listening to the hearings, Feinstein just objected to the hurried pace of getting a bill proposal complete today, and said that she would vote against taking up Frist's alternative.
Frist up now on C-SPAN2 talking about the calendar for the week.
I tuned in a bit late, and therefore (probably) missed his plan for the immigration bill. Absent some other agreement, he'll bring up a cloture vote on proceeding to take up his "enforcement only" bill, said cloture vote to be tomorrow morning. Reid has also objected to taking up the Frist alternative, and the DEMs can kill taking it up with a 41 vote minority.

live feed of LA walkouts.....
Talk about your "peaceful protest". (destruction of public property).
Thanks...
That should come as no surprise to anyone. Specter has come down on the same side as Durbin who have both attacked the NSA spy program for months.
Yep, and if there is still disagreement between both the House and the Senate, both houses of Congress come together to work out a compromise.
Thanks for the pings
Thanks for the info. Calling her office now.
Having worked for many years for the Dallas Public schools,
I can tell you that a good number of these students are
probably *not* here legally--and proud of it.
These are the kids whose parents (WHEN I was able to get them to come in for meetings) dared tell me through an interpreter (usually their kid/s) that *I* should learn
Spanish, because their language was more important than English and *I* was being disrespectful to *them* for speaking to them in English. Feh.
I'm curious as to what the school districts will do to these students for skipping out of school--I hope they are all put on detention and it's put in their permanent file! But Dallas schools will probably go belly up, because they get a lot of govt money for every student enrolled, and they don't want to lose those $$$$$$$.
Sickening. These kids are encouraging illegal activity. I wish the media would report it as such, instead of saying they are encouraging immigration in their protests!! No one in this country is against LEGAL immigration. It's the people breaking the LAWS that this new bill is aimed at--
why is that so hard to understand, that it is two seperate issues??? Ack.
Is this happening today? Are they walking out again?!
Yup, happening right now. Idiots.
Yes .. expect a long debate with lots of grandstanding lectures

Why can't they keep these kids in school?
School website is down, BTW.
The school locked the gates but the kids jumped the fence according to one article I read.
Where are the police or the truant officers?
It appears that no one heeded Specter's admonition to be prompt.
The only reasonable outcome should be that phase 1 of any legislation produces effective barriers to entry along our borders. I will not support in any way, shape or form any critter that does not act to this end and NOW.
The rest is all bravo sierra. The critters took an oath and they are in breach if they do anything else other than secure this nation. We're in a World Wide, asymmetrical War for crying out loud, on top of the disintegration of what's left of this Constitutional Republic.
I don't buy into Bush's "jobs Americans will not do" garbage any more than I believe his "islam is a religion of peace" spewtum.
Oh, sorry to be going off topic with the events in L.A.
Thanks for the info on Judiciary proceedings.
