A day in the life of President Bush (3/26/06): photos & news
White House & Yahoo News Photos ^ | 3/26/06

Posted on 03/26/2006 5:13:53 PM PST by Wolfstar

PRESIDENTIAL NEWS OF THE DAY: The President and First Lady, accompanied by the Secretary of State, returned from Camp David earlier today. It will be a momentous week in Washington as the Supreme Court hears oral arguments on a military commissions case, and the Senate Judiciary Committee holds a hearing on Sen. Russ Feingold's call to censure the President over the wiretap controversy. In this mix of venality and stupidity, there is some happier news:

Cincinnati, OH (Sports Network) - The Cincinnati Reds announced Friday that President George W. Bush will throw out the first pitch prior to the Reds' opening game against the Chicago Cubs on Monday April 3, at 2:10 p.m. (et) at Great American Ball Park.

President Bush's father, George Herbert Walker Bush, threw out the first pitch at the inaugural regular-season game at Great American Ball Park in 2003.

George W. Bush will be the first sitting president ever to throw out an opening day first pitch in the city of Cincinnati and just the second sitting president to attend a baseball game in the Queen City, William Howard Taft being the other in 1912.

The Washington Post story about the military tribunals Supreme Court case:

Court Case Challenges Power of President (click title link to read complete story)
Military Tribunals' Legitimacy at Issue
By Charles Lane
Washington Post Staff Writer
Sunday, March 26, 2006

Seized by U.S. forces in Afghanistan and imprisoned at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, Osama bin Laden's former chauffeur is now seeking victory over President Bush in a new arena: the Supreme Court.

In oral arguments Tuesday, an attorney for Salim Ahmed Hamdan will ask the justices to declare unconstitutional the U.S. military commission that plans to try him for conspiring with his former boss to carry out terrorist attacks.

This story is great! Vice President Cheney took on the Democrats for their attacks on the President over the wiretap matter.

Cheney on attack after Dems call Bush 'dangerously incompetent' (click title link to read complete story)
Saturday, March 25, 2006 6:46 PM CST

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) - Vice President Dick Cheney blasted Democrats for opposing provisions of the Patriot Act and criticizing President Bush's approval of secret wiretaps for domestic surveillance at a fundraising lunch Friday.

Two days after Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid called Bush “dangerously incompetent,” Cheney said if Democrats were capable of handling the war on terror, “Then I ought to be singing on American Idol.”

“The president and I welcome the debate, because every voter in America needs to know how the leaders of the Democratic party view the war on terror,” he said at the event for U.S. Rep. Ric Keller, R-Orlando.

THE WEEK AHEAD: Not much news available today about next week's presidential schedule. I was only able to find this: President Bush will welcome President Olusegun Obasanjo of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to the White House March 29.

THIS WILL BE A TOUGH WEEK FOR THE PRESIDENT . . . The "armchair presidents" will be out in force pontificating and attacking relentlessy re: immigration. [FYI: The President will attend a naturalization ceremony tomorrow and a special conference in Mexico later this week . . . I can hear the caustic/caddy remarks already!]

For my own sanity, I plan to ignore all areas of FR except the DOSE. I also plan to ignore all of the radio talk shows and blogs with the exception of Rush -- Rush is the only pundit who can discuss COMPLEX/CONTROVERSIAL issues with reason and reasonableness!

FYI: Rasmussen's JA ratings for the President have increased by a net 8 (almost 9) points from last weekend . . . 44/45% approve 55% disapprove (-11) vs 40% approve 59% disapprove (-19) . . . The President's speeches/press conference last week worked (despite higher gas prices and immigration 'noise'). HOWEVER, I do expect this week's nastiness to send the ratings downward again . . . NOT TO WORRY . . . the President is going to do what he feels is right, not what he feels will poll well . . . Like Lincoln, Churchill, Reagan, and other leaders before him, he will take the short-term pain for long-term gain (for our country) . . . history will remember him fondly!
http://www.rasmussenreports.com/Bush_Job_Approval.htm

PREDICTION: Tomorrow, Hannity will make one of his insufferable "I'm just being intellectually honest" rants during which he will ask: What would Reagan do (about immigration)? . . . Hey Sean, we don't have to wonder; we KNOW what Reagan DID . . . Reagan signed a blanket AMNESTY bill; something President Bush will not do.

[However, like President Reagan, President Bush is a pragmatist who is simply trying to find a rational/workable method for dealing with the 10-12 million illegals who are already in this country . . . I wish him Godspeed!]

I especially love the ones of the pups!

I'm always grateful there are so many dog lovers on the Dose, because most of us get such joy out of seeing the dogs.

I'm really going to have a tough week. I generally support Bush's approach to immigration, and I normally count on Tony Snow to have the best researched and calmest discussion about "hot button" issues.
But the local station that carried him changed over to a Spanish language station last Fri.

Bummer!

Here is an update on Gavin's condition posted by Justanobody this morning:

Cindy called this morning with an update on Gavin's condition. She had a restless night and at 4:30 finally went to talk with the nurses. She said she is a little down today after being up yesterday. The strain and lack of sleep probably have a great deal to do with the anxiousness. The doctors have removed the ventilator and Gavin is breathing on his own! Thank you Lord for answered prayer! Gavin has been moving quite a bit from all extremities, not just his arms. He appeared to be fighting against the restraints so they have removed them. The nurses told Cindy that Gavin is one of the strongest they have ever had to handle. She said the nurses are little bitty things and he can really make them work. They have inserted an NG tube to provide nourishment. He is also making sounds, groans and moans, but sounds. The left temple area of his brain is where the most damage appears, which is the speech area. The doctors "don't want to get our hopes up too much" she said. They told her every injury is different and every response is different. Cindy continues to sing the praises of the hospital and those that care for Gavin, saying "This place is phenomenal, he couldn't be in better hands." Gavin is in the hands of the Lord our God and His agents, so she is correct. Thank you Lord! Cindy is overwhelmed by the response from her FReeper family, knowing she can call us when she needs encouragement has been a blessing for her. She has been reading the prayer thread that CindyDawg delivered to the hospital and is grateful that so many are praying for Gavin and their family. We ask for continued prayers and support as the Lord continues to touch and heal Gavin. "And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us." I John 5:14 420 posted on 03/26/2006 8:12:49 AM PST by Justanobody

And Barney and Miss Beazley are such great dogs! I am an animal lover in general - dogs, cats, rabbits, ferrets, monkeys! Everything but snakes!

Deb, for my sanity I have pretty much taken a sabbatical from politics and most news. I pay attention to the Dose and the AI thread. That's about it.

LOL...I had to laugh at this...this is typical Sean...I am sick and tired of hearing that *what would Reagan do* line...I don't listen to him like I used to...

I have been despondent the last few days thinking about the dreadful problems President Bush has with such disgusting antagonists. I have been praying for him. It is all in G-d's Hand. With a might hand and an outstreched arm He saved us before.

Man! I have missed being here. I was out of town. The president's facial expressions truly show his dislike and disapproval of the press don't they! LOL!

Thanks for a great bunch of pictures today, Wolfstar!

The "I'm a Reagan Conservative" line sounds awfully weak when he rants against amnesty and illegal immigration, when President Reagan granted a gigantic amnesty to those already here and that only encouraged more to come. Now he wants to blame President Bush that more than ever are coming here...

Some people get REALLY irritated with me when I mention that. They don't like to be reminded that President Reagan wasn't perfect. I love President Reagan but he was not perfect.
