Marines Try to Recruit 78-Year-Old Woman
Sat Mar 25, 4:28 AM ET
SAUGUS, Calif. - Sonia Goldstein was flattered by the nice recruiting letter asking her to consider becoming one of "the few, the proud." But at age 78, she believes she's just a little old to enlist in the U.S. Marine Corps.
"I couldn't believe it," Goldstein told KCAL-TV on Friday. "My girls were sitting here ... we were in hysterics, we laughed so hard."
The letter told her the corps could use her unique language skills, but also warned that life as a Marine would test her physical and mental abilities "beyond anything you've ever known."
"There I am with my walker. I can't maneuver from here to there without it," said Goldstein, who added that her only language is English.
"I'll do whatever I could for this wonderful country we live in," she said. "But you know, this is kind of stretching it a bit."
The Marines ordinarily recruit people 18 to 27, said Maj. Joseph Kloppel, a corps spokesman. He said the letter must have been sent by mistake.
"Seventy-eight is obviously too old," Kloppel added.
Big deal. A mailing list error.
But we all know the media will hype it to milk some perception that the recruiters are desperate.
I've got a week's pay that says she could kick Jimmy Carter's ass. |
Hell, I'd give a week's pay to watch that fight on Pay-per-view.
I saw this story earlier on a forum for Marines that I frequent. Somebody said something like 'They'll let her keep her walker, but she'll have to double-time around carrying it at high port'. LOL!
Well, she could visit the USMC recruiting station with the letter, and sort the things out.
I got a paper cut at work today. Perhaps that will make national headlines?
I am so not feeling my groove right now.
Sonia Goldstein, 78, thought it was hilarious when she received a recruitment letter from the Marine Corps.
Standing Tall with my walker
Not a Marine, but I'm a talker.
Ain't no use in looking down
Ain't no Ensure on the ground
If I die on the Russian Front
Bury me in Depends, grunt!
1 - 2 - 3 - 4....
Sorry - some things I just can't resist. *grin*
I'd love to help ya out- I wandered into the Marine recruiting station after 9/11 while I was recuperating from a 5x bypass, to see if they'd take a prior service Marine back.
They didn't.
The same day the old bag also received a letter from Ed McMahan claiming that she may have already won.......
...an all-expense-paid trip to MCRD. Ed McMahon is a Brigadier General.
Old bag... LOL! thats harsh!
That could have gotten you a Purple Heart in John Kerry's old outfit.
