BUSH'S OPEN-BORDERS PLATITUDES

We are not a "nation of immigrants." This is both a factual error and a warm-and-fuzzy non sequitur. Eighty-five percent of the residents currently in the United States were born here. Sure, we are almost all descendants of immigrants. But we are not a "nation of immigrants."

(Isn’t it funny, by the way, how the politically correct multiculturalists who claim we are a “nation of immigrants” are sooo insensitive toward Native American Indians, Native Alaskans, Native Hawaiians, and descendants of black slaves who did not “immigrate” here in any common sense of the word?)

Even if we were a “nation of immigrants,” it does not explain why we should be against sensible immigration control.

The real reason there is a so-called labor shortage in the U.S. is because of abortion. Even the GOP won't touch this one.

I walked through the square in front of the City Hall of Dallas today while the pro-illegal protesters were there. What a nice group of people. Really. Being a middle-aged pretty obviously conservative white guy got me a few smiles and "Hello"s.

Mainly, the types of people who cross the border illegally are the sort we should be attracting to this country legally. I really dislike the "Illegal" part. They shouldn't do that. But I think there is an excellent demographic here that if we provided a safe and sane border policy, we'd be happy to have many of these people.

Unguarded borders are a National Security Risk. Illegality of immigration imposes many other criminal elements into society that are unhelpful. Some programatically controlled immigration plan would be a big improvement over what we have today. I don't have a silver bullet for what that is.

But let's be careful to segregate the many difficulties cited above from the vast majority of the illegal immigrant population. I feel much better and safer walking through a group of illegals and their families having a very nice protest march than I would with a bunch of leftists. The leftists would happily physically attack me. These folks are the salt of the earth, and I'd trust them with my life.

Before y'all flame me, let me note that I believe the only effective border control will be a double row of fences, land mines and .50 cal machine gun nests every .5 miles. If America is prepared to do that (which I doubt), we can actually control the border. Short of that, the economic incentives to come here are too great. Nothing will stop them short of death. I'll support the landmines, but I doubt we can get more than 20% of Americans to agree to mow down border crossers. So I think we're stuck with something else, to be designed. So until then, let's recognize what I saw today. Most of these folks are really nice people!

"If there was any doubt about the large volume of migrant workers in Colorado, a crowd of more than 50,000 Latino demonstrators proved it today."

The worst part is that the ones marching are only a small portion.

An airhead.

Yes, but if you puncture an airhead, pressure is released. Thus the blowhard.

You'll get no flame from me. However, being nice and being right is not the same thing. There are very nice Scientologists out there, but they're dead wrong.

Don't forget this quote from a former President:

”We have room but for one flag... We have room but for one language... and we have room for but one sole loyalty, and that is the loyality to the American people.” - Theodore Roosevelt.

Bush is simply acting like a "Demopublican" . . . Congress is out to lunch as usual. This is not the America I grew up in and I do not recognize my country anymore. Politicians have turned the U.S. into a vast plantation where citizenship is not required. Everybody living here is considered to be a taxpayer and consumer. Elitists control the government, educational system and the national economy.

"Bush's fault, literally. His second-term is circling the drain over this issue."

- Apparently, since you believe that this immigration problem is ALL "Bush's fault", then it must have begun after he took office.
Now then, please explain to the rest of us the Democratic Party's long neglected plan that Bush should have adopted that would have dealt with this issue.
(Please don't suggest that Bush round up 10 million people and cram them all into cattle cars bound for Mexico because we live in the real world and it ain't gonna happen.)

I know I will get flamed for saying this, but Bush is a horrible President. His legacy will be an awful one, and his presidency will be remembered as a failure. Now, that being said, I realize that he gets blamed for alot of things that are not his fault, and he is fighting an uphill battle against the media everyday. I understand that. However, this issue in particular is one that he can control. He has the power to do so. Instead of doing what the vast majority of American citizens want done, however, he is selling out to business interests, something I thought the Republican Party had put behind them. Apparently they have not. If he truly does support an amnesty plan, then he should have the guts to come out and say so, rather than giving us all this double speak.

I don't care what Bush, the GOP leadership, or the Chamber of Commerce thinks. Any plan in the style of McCain/Kennedy is amnesty, plain and simple. If the platform of this President, and this party, is to to cater to business interests even when they conflict with the will of the people, then everybody needs to rethink their party loyalty and/or affiliation.
