In an effort to jump-start her sputtering Senate campaign, Rep. Katherine Harris went on national television invoking the memory of her late father and saying the money he left her will form the financial foundation of her challenge to Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson.
Now the Harris campaign says that's not the case.
Campaign spokeswoman Morgan Dobbs said Thursday that Harris will sell her existing assets rather than rely on money from her father, a bank executive who died in January.
The Republican from Longboat Key appeared on national television saying she would use the money left to her by her father to infuse her campaign with a badly needed shot of financing.
The announcement was the centerpiece of her appearance on Fox News, where Harris reaffirmed her commitment to the race.
"I'm going to take his legacy that he gave to me, everything I have, and I'm going to put it in this race," she told Sean Hannity. "I'm going to commit my legacy from my father -- $10 million."
A moment later, Hannity asked, "This is money from your father?"
"Yes," replied Harris.

Covered the Clayton Williams campaign. He was a very rich Texan running for governor against Ann Richards. Williams started with a 22 point lead, and lost the election. It was no bad that in the last three weeks the campaign staffers stopped referring to him as Clayton Williams. but Satan Williams, the Candidate from Hell!
That was after an entire campaign. Harris is trying to get into that position even more quickly.
Please dont get me wrong. Love Katherine dearly. Maxed out my FTC-allowed contributions to her each cycle. My Granddaughter is named after her.
But this campaign is a disaster. The CD, PR person and Issues chief should all be shot!
I want an R to win. I want KH to win
but this is turning out to be a disaster!
"But this campaign is a disaster. The CD, PR person and Issues chief should all be shot!"
Is any of this a media invention or is it really as bad as it looks?
Losing this one is not an option!
Ideas are welcome....please.
What's the deal with K. Harris. I'm up north and I even sent her a contribution but she seems to be a pariah of some sort with the GOP.
Starting to look like Pirro 2 as far as organization.
One would hope. That would be a drastic improvement....
Is this for real? I saw her on Hannity, and she made it very clear, in no uncertain terms, that her father's inheritance would be used in the campaign. Now, a few days later, she's retracting that?
I haven't joined the anti-Harris bandwagon here, but this looks awful.
Honestly, the naysayers are out in force for no reason, again.
Tammy-Faye Baker alert!
No reason? If this is true, this is a very good reason for her to drop out now and let somebody else try.
I wouldn't believe everything the media puts out on her. They have the full court press on KH right now and what surprises me is that FReepers are believing it.
Harris's accountant got to her. There are apparently two little lockboxes. Daddy's ten million, and her own ten million. It is not clear whether this is a switch in lock boxes, and Harris just got confused which box to open, or there is only one box, and it's shut, or two boxes, and there are both shut. So many possiblities, and so little time.
She stated repeatedly that the 10 million was all she had. She said she was putting it ALL on the line. So now she has TWO $10 million sources?
This is a fiasco.
2 things: 1) *IF* I was running for political office, which I won't because I can't suffer fools, 2) I *would not* use an inheritance of any kind to get elected.
If people didn't believe in me enough to support my campaign, I sure wouldn't force my way in off an inheritance.
It is unclear how many lock boxes there are. But that was one spin from team Harris. Team Harris might not know themselves.
The you have already fallen for the trap. The media's purpose in this:
First throw out an allegation...put the conservative on the defensive.
Call for an investigation....put the conservative on the defensive.
Have the Conservative apologize or clarify these "allegations"...put the conservative on the defensive.
Move on to the next scandal...put the conservative on the defensive.
Then, while you are talking about any conservative you can call them "scandal ridden".
