"Bush signed it , but he didnt write it , nor did he pass it through the Congress. Its a bad law and he should have vetoed it but the dipsticks in the Congress should have done the same thing."
Bingo!
While it never should have been signed, sometimes a manager has to trust those under him to do their job correctly, and in the best interest of the company.
The President had some other pressing issues to deal with at same time?
The other popular theory is that he was "throwing a bone" to some in Congress to gain their support, after being advised by legal scholars that the USSC would shoot it down.
To me the latter is the more likely, and who at the time would have thought that "Insane McCain" would try to push for extending it to cover personal political speech on the Internet? I wouldn't have thought that even though I hated the bill at the time because it gagged the NRA before elections.
I'm not giving the President a pass on it, I just don't think many could have foreseen it going where it is now.

An obvious violation of the Constitution and Bush signed it and the Supremes upheld it. Oh yes, what sworn oath was that?
To: pro1stamendment
"I, George Walker Bush, do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States, and I will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States."That is the oath of office Bush swore when he was inaugurated. He is publicly on record as stating that he believed parts of the bill to be unconstitutional but signed it anyway. He thus violated his oath of office and, as has already been said, that is indefensible!
The same is true of every congressman and senator who voted for it while believing any part of it to be unconstitutional!

Why don't you adress the question he asked instead of making some assertion that...failing being Kreskin you can't possibly know?

Dead wrong. We were told after that "oh you first amendment people are just single issue people". Right...record spending, no defense of the borders, opening American businesses to our enemies. Yep all just single issues.
This is Bush's last term. I wish him well. I write that without sarcasm. I voted for him twice (holding my nose).
I wish he would go back to reforming Social Security, come around on the borders and fight to reduce spending. Conservative principles have always carried the day and it puzzled alot of us as to just why Bush embraces some and rejects others.
As far as the attack on the First Amendment it would be great if he called a press conference; said what a horrible mistake he made signing McCain-Feingold into law and call on Congress to repeal that law.

Back when he signed it, most of us on this forum though it was safe for him to sign it because it would never pass constitutional muster with the supreme court. Anyone who truly thought that is just a moron propping up power-mad, unprincipled politicians. The opposite of freedom-lovers.
Disgusting.

To admit that there "may be" unconstitutional aspects of this bill, and still go on and sign it, THAT is indefensible.
