Hackers boot a Dell with Mac OS X (Intel)

Hackers boot a Dell with Mac OS X (Intel). March 24, 2006 -- Unidentified programmers have hacked the Intel version of Mac OS X to enable it to boot a Dell PC. A file called the "JaS4.2b patch" can be used to create a customized installer DVD for installing on a Dell PC.

A website called MacaDell describes the patch. The MacDell site has also has a page that describes how to use the JaS4.2b patch to create a customized installer disc for Mac OS X.

Using the hack is illegal because it breaks Apple’s Mac OS X license agreement, which specifies that the operating system be run on an “Apple-labeled computer.”

According to MacaDell, work on the hack began when a Russian hacker known as Maxxuss cracked the encrypted security layer in Mac OS X that usually requires the software to be installed on a certain Mac model. Other hackers added to the work, and a programmer known as JaS put the work together in the JaS4.2b patch.

The hack emulates the EFI boot firmware found in Intel-based Macs. It also emulates an instruction set called SSE3 in order to support processors older than the Dual Core used in the Intel Macs. MacaDell reports that the hack doesn’t work on every computer, and doesn’t support some functions, such as wireless networking and certain audio and video cards.

At this point, the Intel version of Mac OS X is only available with the purchase of an Intel-based Mac.

No idea in those two cases, but it's not uncommon in large corporations for house counsel to hand down the orders as to policy decisons for "matters related to legal issues", and have their orders carried out without question.

Seems like the bigger the corporation, the larger the hierarchy, the less possible it is to get anything to happen that's not printed in the Policy Manual. Managers actually THINKING is largely a thing of the past ("IMO").

So, you can imagine my amazement that people keep Microsoft alive, for so long, when they produce such a sick operating system, infected by so many viruses and barely able to boot up -- without being infected in the first 30 seconds by another virus.

The vapors, the vapors! Oh! I declayuh!

What is this, "Be a Drama-Queen" Week?

LOL!

You're that one that said Macs are great! tell me what kind of video card you have in your Mac! LOL

That little interchange of a half-dozen posts or so, absolutely priceless!

Starts out with Macolyte doing classic dick-wave, chanting "nana nana nana, mine's bigger!"

So, you pull out a ruler, and ask for measurements -- at which point he goes absolutely bonkers, culminating in a grand SCREAM about "NOBODY CARES!!!! Get a life"!

This is going straight-to-disk. I want my kids to enjoy it when they grow up as much as I'm enjoying it now. Too rich!

It's almost as if we're being trolled by people wanting to make Macolytes look weird! They start fights and then run away crying about how unfair it all is, they claim superiority, and then when asked to substantiate it, they go berserk, fingers in ears, doing a 99 decibel "I CAN'T HEAR YOU!" routine.

About the only thing they haven't given us yet is a hilarious round of, "I said I'm going to ignore you if you don't answer me! Do you hear me? I said I'm going to IGNORE you!"

My sides are splitting!

I don't care if the Macolytes are a buncha commedians trying to make Mac users come off like..., well, like "Mac users". It's that good! Fantastic material, definitely one for the archives.

I dunno - I must be doing something wrong. I bought a Mac, but I didn't turn into an ass. Is there some optional upgrade I missed?

What?!?!? You didn't buy the "Permanent-Puberty" upgrade? :)

I must say I have a really hard time believing that the sort of "evangelism" displayed here is also displayed in real life. I mean, a man has only 32 teeth to lose in one lifetime. :) (Old Grateful Dead tune running through my mind at the moment: "Alabama")

Some of my best friends use Macs. (I'm married to one!) But, they don't have "the vapors" over it.

Gotta hand it to Jobs, he really knows how to bring out the "inner drama-queen" in some folks.

what is your obsession with wire and componets?

Well, y'see, it's all that complcated stuff, that makes my brain hurt if I try to even think about it!

It's so IKKY!

I like nice things! I like brite sunny days! I like Strawberry Shortcake! I like training wheels on my bike! (All that IKKY stuff about trying to keep it standing up straight? That's for you LOOOOSERS who are into all those wires and components and stuff!) I want to ENJOY riding my bike, not going, "oh, look at me, I'm SUCH a big boy, I made my bike stand up straight all on my own!"

I like my training wheels. But I don't use that silly term for them. I call them pleasure wheels! That's what the salesman told me they really are, anyway. He said you "wires and components and complicated stuff" type guys try to make us MATURE people feel bad about our special bikes, by giving them bad names like "training wheels." Did I mention I like Strawberry Shortcake! I do! I even have a Straberry Shortcake bike! It's really cool! None of those silly wires or components hanging off it.

When I get older (I'm very MATURE now, by the way!) I am going to get a car, too! It will have an automatic transmission! None of those silly sticks and pedals all over the floor, IKKY! I just want to enjoy my car! It will have a horn that goes "beep beep" in a most tasteful way, none of that "HONK HONK" like your junky car with all those sticks and pedals and components. LOL!

Face it. I am SO much cooler than you! It's a wonder I even bother to listen to you!

(OK, how'd I do? Can I "pass for a Macolyte"? :)

I'm generally still using fedora IV. First thing Ubunto did on a test machine here was to auto "upgrade" to a 2.6 kernel which Firefox won't work with. Do you know anything about that?

Should I send you a link to an entire list of offending brands... Nichicon, used in the Dell machines, is a Japanese company... Though they admitted they knew why they failed, the other guys keep their heads in the sand...
