SOUTH EL MONTE, Calif. - Explosives experts defused a homemade bomb found in the backseat of a car early Friday after the driver was stopped for speeding in this eastern Los Angeles suburb, authorities said.

The bomb was defused safely, but several industrial businesses in the area were evacuated and a main boulevard was closed for more than three hours.

Any wagers anyone?

White Supremist? Na. If it was, it would be all over the news, as well it should be. But this offender is probably in the protected class. (muslim)

What? Someone took that bet?

I'll give an extra dollar to the next FR fund drive if it's a Muslim, and you'll give 10 if it's not. Isn't that what "10 to 1 he's Muslim" means?

Is that what they call those "pump" thingies these days? ;-P

LOL! Not quite. It uses isotopes of boron, cadmium, and lithium sandwiched between Plexiglass plates which is then buttressed up against and alpha scintillometer.

The neutrons are captured by the sandwiched plates, which then emit an Alpha which is read by the alpha scintillometer. (zinc sulfide emits photons when struck by alpha particles which are then counted by a photomultiplier tube)

The whole assembly is then housed in a cadmium tube.

No dude.

10 to 1 means that if it's not a Muslim, I owe you a dollar.

If it is a Muslim, you owe me 10 bucks.

Assuming I bet a dollar.

Insanity is rampant these days. We inspect old ladies down to their support hose at the airport while clearly Muslim men pass by with not a word.

Gee, too bad someone didn't stop McVeigh on his way to OKC with a bunch of barrels of diesel, huh? Besides, he was just an average looking white guy, right?

I figured it was some sort of equipment for radio astronomy, but couldn't resist the opportunity for a cheap joke!

Hm. Well, you're still on -- if it's a Muslim, I'll pay $10 to FR on the next fund drive, and if it's not, you pay FR an extra buck.

Yup ... but hey, FR needs every extra dollar it can get, so your contribution will be appreciated. ;-)

LOL! :-)

I also have a complete wavegude/feed front-end assembly at 34 gigs for a satellite transmitter sitting in the junk pile back there as well.

Ummm... And an Argon/Ion laser, Geiger Meuller counter, liquid hydrogen valve from a NERVA rocket engine, S-band wavegude switch, spacecraft MLI, detector assembly from a VELA satellite, honeycomb titanium skin from a TDRSS satellite, Space Shutttle tile, Apollo era 3 axis gyro, a modern ring laser gyro, etc. (BTW I really do carry all this stuff - no exaggeration here)

My hatch back area looks like a surplus junk store.

(I travel around to schools giving lectures on space so I have tons of space hardware (JUNK) in my car)

Blowing up the innocent civilians Americans refuse to blow up. And doing it cheaper, too.

I doubt if it's an illegal...
and fabricating IEDs requires technical proficiency that Americans don't have...
My bet is that an H1-B visa is involved.

I built a 10 foot high tesla coil that was so impressive the neighbor lady called 911 and screamed UFO's have landed. The cops were pretty impressed. LOL!

Thank God that was before 9/11!

It's LA -- so it could be Brad Pitt, Charlie Sheen, or any number of ill-kempt H-wood "stars."
