Canada's annual seal hunt, the focus of a major protest effort by animal activists, will start on Saturday and could last longer than usual because the ice floes on which the seals gather are in poor condition, officials said on Thursday.
Canada says a total of 325,000 harp seal pups can be shot or clubbed to death this year. The first stage of the hunt, which takes place on ice in the Gulf of St. Lawrence on Canada's East Coast, will account for just over 90,000 animals.
Activists, who say the killing is cruel and unnecessary, say they will film the proceedings. The hunt officially starts at 6 a.m. on Saturday.

Well the fact that you came close to Sharia shit is astounding. But I stand corrected: McGinty finally did the right thing.

NO RELIGION IN FAMILY LAW
BYLINE: BY SUN STAFF AND WIRE SERVICES
Ontario has formally passed legislation to prohibit the use of religious tribunals to settle family law disputes such as custody and divorce.
Premier Dalton McGuinty promised last year to prohibit the use of religious rules, called sharia law, to settle Muslim family law cases.
McGuinty surprised many when he said he would not only ban sharia but all religious arbitrations.
For the first time in 30 years there was a net re- migration of Canadian trained doctors to Canada by a couple hundred? So what? You still have a terrible problem with not enough specialists and GPs and available technology. Hospitals on the US side of the border still see hundreds of Canadians every month.
Lack of enough diagnostic equipment, lengthy wait times for surgeries, etc. will not be fixed until you privatize your health care delivery system further.
Hospitals on the US side of the border still see hundreds of Canadians every month.
Your rhetoric is foolishness .
Canadian "medicare refugee myth" debunked in major US study
Canadians are not rushing across the border to purchase medical care in the United States, a new study based largely on American data has concluded. In fact, the use of American medical facilities by Canadians is "so small as to be barely detectable."
The authors of "Phantoms in the snow: Canadians' use of health care services in the United States" the article appeared in the May/June issue of Health Affairs,
the most influential US health policy journal (www.healthaffairs .org/freecontent/v21n3/s6.htm) conclude that debate over the issue has been driven by politics,
not facts.
They drew this conclusion from a telephone survey of ambulatory care facilities in heavily populated US urban areas bordering Canada (Buffalo, Detroit and Seattle)
and from statewide hospital discharge data from Michigan, New York State and Washington State. Author Steven Katz of the University of Michigan and his
colleagues created a catchy label for the "phantom hordes of Canadian medical refugees" by tagging the notion a "policy zombie" an idea that is intellectually dead
because there is no evidence to substantiate it but somehow manages to live on because it is useful to certain powerful interest groups.
Of the US ambulatory facilities surveyed, 40% reported seeing no Canadians and a further 40% had seen fewer than 10.
Only 5% of facilities had seen more than 25 Canadians in the previous year,
From 1994 to 1998, 2.3 Canadians were admitted to hospital in the 3 US states studied for every 1000 admissions in the 3 neighbouring Canadian provinces.
Moreover, 80% of the stateside admissions were prompted by emergencies and pregnancies.
"Less than 5% of Canadians feel they are denied access to health care because of cost," he argues. "The equivalent figure in the US is 24%."
Fraser Institute survey of 2700 Canadian physicians' experiences with waiting lists suggests there has been a modest increase in the number of people looking for
treatment in the US. "We asked what percentage of their patients have gone to the US for help. The figure used to be 1% percent, and it has risen to 1.5%

You need to trust your Canadian bureacrats less and the truth more:

W. Gifford-Jones, himself a Canadian doctor, wrote a column for The Evening Telegram (St. Johns, Newfoundland, Canada) entitled, "Public's Appetite Too Ravenous for Free Medical Care.'" He stated: "Mrs. Clinton take note. Many hospital beds in Canada have closed due to a lack of government funding. Operating rooms stand idle at certain times in a desperate effort to save money. Cutbacks are evident in every hospital service. It's meant that some Canadians have become more familiar with the U.S. But they're not tourists on their way to the Grand Canyon. Rather, they've crossed the border for bypass surgery and other procedures to avoid long waiting lists in Canada.
But not only patients cross the 49th parallel. Some of the best physicians and surgeons have fled south, due to inadequacies in the system. One doctor who moved to Buffalo, N.Y., told me, Now I'm considered part of the solution. In Canada I was considered part of the problem.'" Furthermore, scores of wealthy and well-connected Canadians come to the United States for surgery because they cannot get timely, quality service in Canada's own nationalized health care system.
There is lots more should you wish. Stay healthy up there!
Exactly, but do you understand what you read or do you interpret it
based on your preconceived bias?????
Here's what went down.
Jews have traditionally been allowed to settle certain legal disputes
outside of the Judicial system using some Jewish arbitration process.
The Muslims petitioned the Gov't to have "similar" rights and use
their sharia law to settle certain disputes.
The LIBERAL Gov't of Ontario told the Muslims essentially "no
way, Muslims". But it had to appear fair and proceeded to basically
remove the prior right of any group (read "Jews") to use religious
law in place of the prevailing public Judicial system.
I hope that clarifies...
It will,
if she/he is 'man enough' (in the Rush Limbaugh terminology) to learn the facts.
This might involve taking the chip off her/his shoulder regarding us, but I think he/she is capable of this.

eleni121,
It appears to some of us that you are very angry at Canadians.
We've spent the last ( ? ) years fighting to get our country back.
Proud American, can you ask your husband how to say "Stop fighting! We're on the same side!" in French?
Thanks!
Yeah right. I'll stick with the CMAJ and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research . And from what I know from 40 years of using Canada Health care.
As Gifford-Jones, hes Canadas best -known medical journalist. As Dr. Ken Walker, hes a popular Toronto-based gynecologist.
Hey, everybody. Did you hear that Canada's annual seal hunt is going to take place right off quick?
All I can say is stay well. And immediate cardiac care is available in the USA...but you know that.
Your added piece is well-intentioned but unecessary.
Jewish religious law does not mandate stoning and chopping of hands. Idiot!
Well let me submit to the collective "you" up there..that Canadians harldy create a blip in my conscious day to day life.
Exept when they start squawking about stuff they are clueless about llke socialized medicine.
Oh please, Being ignorant is not the same as being stupid. You've already proven you are one , you need not prove the other.
You prove the well known fact that Canadians...well they just need longer.
"Why are they whining about a species who is absolutely thriving? You tell me..... Face Time. I Say FO."
I can answer that question LilyBean, it's because the Greenpeace documentary of the 1970s, which showed BABY seals being clubbed by evil clubbers, was the SINGLE biggest fundraiser for AR groups ever. The AR organizations acknowledge this, and use it as a textbook example of how to illicit public support/funds.
Only problem is, a Canadian investigative journalist proved years ago the seal clubbers in the documentary were PAID to club those seals by Greenpeace. It was very profitable for Greenpeace.
Plus seals are SO CUTE.
Remember Free Willy, the movie? After the movie the AR groups started a fundraising drive to raise funds to -- well -- Free Willy, the whale in the movie.
Only problem was, a Free Willy wasn't valuable as a fundraiser. So, they couldn't Free Willy because they needed him to raise money for the cause. Anyway, Willy either died in captivity or was freed after many, many years held in captivity by the people who freed him, and immediately died (can't remember which, but it was one of the two).
The Animal Rights/Animal Protection groups are an interesting study. Mostly they are about raising money. The Humane Society of the U.S. is behind this seal protest. Check into their finances sometime :)Also, don't expect them to spend any of the millions they raise to save, feed, house, spay, or neuter any animals. Most of their funding goes for outrageous salaries and for fundraising efforts (like anti seal hunts) to raise more money.
That chip is hard to remove, eh? Or do you like the feeling of that weight on your shoulder?
Too bad all your opinions about us are based on what you think you learned, 5 years ago.
Exept when they start squawking about stuff they are clueless about llke socialized medicine.
Yup. We have never heard of socialized medicine.
OTOH, you are an expert.
BTW, the spell check button is just to the left of the preview button.
That's one thing I must give Canadians credit for...they use the spell checker properly.
There was a clip on the news last night. A woman said it would be the last year for the hunt because the US Humane Society would stop it next year .
Not a chance. But send money anyway. :)
Msot of the pelts go to the fashion industry. Incomprehensible how this slaughter can go on...since the Canadians just about destroyed the cod through overfishing..they now feel they can do the same to the seals.
How sad.
