Pierre, SD (LifeNews.com) -- A South Dakota Indian tribe is throwing a monkey wrench into the state's plans to ban virtually all abortions in the state. Should the ban become law, one tribe says it will open up an abortion business on their tribal lands, which wouldn't be subjected to the abortion ban.
Cecilia Fire Thunder, president of the Oglala Sioux tribe of South Dakota, says Sioux nation sovereignty means the new ban doesn't apply. As a result, she said she will lead an effort to build a Planned Parenthood abortion center at the Pine Ridge Reservation.
To me, it is now a question of sovereignty, she told Tim Giago who runs a web site called Indianz.com.
I will personally establish a Planned Parenthood clinic on my own land which is within the boundaries of the Pine Ridge Reservation where the State of South Dakota has absolutely no jurisdiction," Fire Thunder said.
A former nurse and health care worker, Fire Thunder is the first woman president of the Sioux nation.
Ah, help the paleface kill hisself off.

custer, where are you....
Just stop patronizing their casinos. They'll get the message soon enough.
I wonder if they'll used Cherokee Hair Coathangers?
Do Indians actually need an abortion mill in their reservations? Is this a cruel joke?
Yea, that'll be the day. Go tell Grandma not to play bingo because there's abortion clinic. ROFLMAO!!!
Time top stop all subsidies to thew tribes!
I guess this is their version of Sharia law...
Interesting. Hadn't thought of this angle. But it really doesn't throw a monkey wrench into anything. If the Supreme Court were to overturn Roe v. Wade (considering the bench is doubtful) and the issue were to return to the states, theoretically there would be situtations much the same between states that kept abortion legal and those that didn't. You would have abortion clinics in those border cities as well.
Krikee, mate, I'd say ditto, except I'm not sure what you said.
Predictable. If the courts hadn't gotten involved in this issue, we would have been a country where those people who feel disgust about abortion would have banned it and those people who feel comfortable about it would have legalized it. Americans were heading in this direction before Roe v. Wade. There is nothing in the Constitution that directly addresses the issue of abortion; therefore, it's an issue left to the states and the people. The people of South Dakota want to ban abortion. Good for them. The Lakota people want to support it. I won't say "good for them" but if that's the way they want to govern themselves, that's their business. The Lakota people are a soveriegn people living in the United States, anyway. Until there's an abortion amenedment in the Constitution, this is a local issue.
Amen to that. Are these people crazy?
It may be funny to you, but many grandmothers DO care about babies being slaughtered for the sake of sexual promiscuity.
time to put all that territory back on the tax roll.
ping
Just doing the job white European men won't do!
Please FReepmail me if you would like to be added to, or removed from, the Pro-Life/Pro-Baby ping list...
Yea, but they won't give up BINGO for it. Believe me.
No problem, just set up a blockade of the roads leading into the Indian nation. Only residents could pass. I give it about 48 hours with empty casinos before the peace pipe was brought out for a round of huffing and puffing.
