Pierre, SD (LifeNews.com) -- A South Dakota Indian tribe is throwing a monkey wrench into the state's plans to ban virtually all abortions in the state. Should the ban become law, one tribe says it will open up an abortion business on their tribal lands, which wouldn't be subjected to the abortion ban.
Cecilia Fire Thunder, president of the Oglala Sioux tribe of South Dakota, says Sioux nation sovereignty means the new ban doesn't apply. As a result, she said she will lead an effort to build a Planned Parenthood abortion center at the Pine Ridge Reservation.
To me, it is now a question of sovereignty, she told Tim Giago who runs a web site called Indianz.com.
I will personally establish a Planned Parenthood clinic on my own land which is within the boundaries of the Pine Ridge Reservation where the State of South Dakota has absolutely no jurisdiction," Fire Thunder said.
A former nurse and health care worker, Fire Thunder is the first woman president of the Sioux nation.
Probably so, but since a few Indian elite have figured out how to turn the rules into something which is not much different than organized crime, only "legal", the chances of them being eliminated are quite slim.
Casinos, cigarettes, and apparently now abortion clinics. Why they haven't done the whorehouse thing is beyond me. It's a natural.
I recall reading a post on a liberal blog before this law was passed, lamenting the fact there was only one clinic still functioning in S. Dakota. This was considered a great imposition in that a majority of its patients came from the Pine Ridge reservation, and the poor ladies had to go to great trouble to arrange transportation most way across the state. Seems abortion, due to a number of factors, is commonly used as back-up birth control by the impoverished Indian, well, I don't guess Maidens would be quite the correct term, would it?
All makes a strange sort of sense. Personally, I think the state moved one Justice too soon. Time will tell.
It depends on how quickly the suit(s) regarding the S. Dakota law move through the legal system. It's quite unlikely to be a Supreme Court case before 2008.
Moving on up from scalping.
My personal view is that "Native Americans" should have to choose. Either they are American citizens or are part of a seperate Nation on a Reservation. If seperate, then they should go back to "wampum" and set an US exchange rate and be subject to visas..
Individual states have the power to ban travel to foreign nations by US citizens? When did they get this?
They are in love with heap wampum.
ROTF! A legitimate BOMB threat couldn't pry those old bats away from their slot machines.
If they open up an abortion clinic on the reservation, you know its not going to be white girls from Sioux Falls going there..... They don't put these places in the nice neighborhoods for a reason.
Come one, come all for the killings!
A lesson in Federalism with an Indian twist. It's not as if the girls of South Dakota can't catch a Greyhound to Minneapolis.
The cool thing about overturning Roe v Wade is that Americans can go along being as schizophrenic about abortion as they wish. California will mandate abortion, Utah will outlaw it, and Oregon will make it a condition of entry at the border. Voila! Everyone's nuts.
"Why they haven't done the whorehouse thing is beyond me."
Maybe indian women look different where you live, but around here........
Then anything goes. If they want to be sovereign, let them provide for their own protections. I hope taxpayer money is not protecting them by providing sheriffs, troopers, etc.
If they want to murder, we can't do anything about it. They're not entitled to use our court system. Let them provide their own.
There are already rumblings about banning the sale of cigarettes on reservations to anyone who is not a tribe member. It wouldn't be too difficult to extend similar regulations to abortion.
There's no requirement that casino employees be indian. Extrapolate that to cathouses.
Chief Whak-um-White-folks abortion and scalping parlor ?
"Just stop patronizing their casinos. They'll get the message soon enough."
Great, great idea. I think that all roads leading to their casinos should suffer "unexpected" closures.
Checkmate.
"They don't put these places in the nice neighborhoods for a reason."
Here in Kansas Wichita to be exact our death mill is run by Tiller the baby killer; it is on the east side of town which is not any ghetto but rather upper middle class.
As far a the other deal don't block the road jack hammer them up so the only way in is by whirlybirds! That will cut down on the rifraf.
Try again. Tribal Police police the Res. Pine Ridge in particular, and I know of many, many more.
We even had a case of extradtion recently, involving a Pine Ridge yute or two, who mixed it up, (using baseball bats in an ally) with some city yutes, and made to 'back over the border' before city, county, or state authorities could nab them. The governor & Fire Thunder; and Fire Thunder & the tribal council, had long and serious talks, before it was resolved.
Not much worse than most of the school teachers I see up on sex charges. LaFave & couple of others are seeming exceptions, but..................
As long as it is a warm pocket, a lot of guys who ~have~ to buy sex don't care about much else. Bags, flags, and "Lights Out" suits them fine.
