A high school English lesson on censorship went awry in Roseville recently, offending Muslims and resulting in apology from the school district. Officials said a librarian at Roseville Area High School last week tried to show students what censorship looks and feels like.
Among the books he tossed into a trash can made to look like a bonfire was the Qur'an, the holy book of Islam. A ninth-grade student, who is Muslim, was offended by the librarian's remarks and actions, sparking calls to the school from her parents and the Muslim American Society-Freedom Foundation.
Using the Qur'an, a book that is holy to 1.7 billion Muslims in the world, was "misguided," said Murad Mohammad, a director for the Muslim foundation's Civil and Legal Rights Department. "It wasn't well thought out or well-planned if a student walks out confused."
But after meeting with school officials this week, Mohammad said he would call the incident a "misunderstanding."
School officials have apologized, saying they need to be culturally sensitive to all students when preparing lesson plans. "We have to have great care in how we deliver messages and still make a point," said Bob Rygh, the school district's human resource director.

Wake up America. We are being windmilled by those who hate us. And they are teaching your children in the public schools.
I also like the way the number of estimated Muslims in the world continues to grow. Before long they will claim to the be majority...liars.
Wasn't the whole idea that burning the Koran (or fricking "Qur'an" if we must) a bad thing? Guess that flew above the heads of these brilliant individuals.
Muzzy math.
Bet if they threw in a Bible, they'd ignore any complaints if they happened in the public school.
If it had been done to a Bible this would be a non-story. (I'm an atheist.) But offend the Koran (Oh, so sorry, Qu'aran"), and it's a sign of how awful "we" are.
Yes, indeed. But rather than explain, the school district retreated and apologized like good little lefties.
They had a lot more fun with censorship in the old days. Savanarola, for instance. He used to have real book and art burning parties in Florence, and everyone came out to celebrate.
Then there was the time after the Restoration when the fellows of I forget which college at Oxford or Cambridge made a big pile of Milton's political tracts and burned them. They had what was called a "hum," which involved humming a little tune as the books burned, as a sign of derision. Fortunately the Librarian at the Bodleian had a whole collection of the same political treatises which he squirreled away in a cupboard until it was safe to find them, many decades later.
What fun is a book burning when you don't even get to set the things alight, and the librarian scolds you the whole time for even thinking about it?
They did.
No complaints.
Whisky Tango Foxtrot!
If Nicholson is saying everyone should have access to information, why would they "decline" to allow the librarian to comment?
There was a Bible involved, as well.
No complaints.
Liberals really are fools--that's the only word that fits. 90% of the folks I encounter in my daily life are libs, and man, it makes me think of moving out of Boston.
"If Nicholson is saying everyone should have access to information, why would they "decline" to allow the librarian to comment?"
A big part of why my head is spinning tonight.
The only reason I know that there was a Bible involved is that a kid that was in the class when it happened called in to the local talker this afternoon and told the WHOLE story.
I suspect that he will be in some deep hockey tomorrow.
Censorship was never a problem for these folks. No, they are all for it as long as "they" get to censor other people's books, ideas, religions, and value systems.
Only mistake I see was not adding pig lard to accelerate the fire.
"No, they are all for it as long as "they" get to censor other people's books, ideas, religions, and value systems."
And they know exactly how to game the system and get the limp-wristed lefties to back down.
No More Apologies!!
I noticed that too. 1 to maybe 1.3 billion. Not 1.7.
Next year it will be 3 billion, then 2/3 of the world's population, etc.
