IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Wednesday,March 22,2006

IREY TO SEEK PENNSYLVANIA'S 12th CONGRESSIONAL SEAT

Washington, PA Today Washington County Commisioner Diana Irey announced her bid to become the next Congreswoman from Pennsylvania's 12th District. In front of a crowd of supporters , and with her family by her side, Irey outlined her reasons for challenging her opponent in this race."For decades, western Pennsylvania looked to John Murtha to stand up for our values. But as the years have drifted by, John Murtha has drifted further and further from the ideals that made this country great. He has become part of the problem in Washington. I don't believe we are receiving the representation in Congress we deserve and the time fo change is now."

Additionally, Irey discussed her proven track record during her tenure as a Washington County Commissioner."There, I have been successful in delivering seven consecutive balanced budgets without one tax increase, Irey stated. She also touted her efforts to enhance economic development in the region by working to create thousands of jobs for area residents.

Commissioner Irey also commented on her greatest accomplishment, the raising of three children with her husband, ages 16,15, and 12. "They are the reason I'm running. I can't sit quietly by while the special interests in Washington, D.C. continue to spend away our children's future."

Diana Irey has spent the last decade in public service as a Washington Conty Commissioner, and she is now running to bring her vision of government responsibility, lower taxes, and family values to the United States Congress as the Representative of the 12th Diistrict.

.....................................

That's the official press release. The announcement took place at 10:30AM EST in Washington,Pennsyvania.A very enthusiastic crowd was on hand, I'd estimate over a hundred people not counting the media.TV, radio and print reporters were there as well.As soon as I have a chance I will post Diana's complete remarks. From Washington she left for Johnston,Pa.She will be making stops at various towns today and tomorrow to announce her candidacy.

I wanted all freepers to know aboutthis as soon as possible.

The above press release doesn't reflect the warm reception her remarks received and leaves out some of her best lines.

I'll paraphrase until I can post a transcript but I liked this: "John Murtha has called for a withdrawal from the war on terror", and said that's not the message the people of southwest Pennsylvania want to send.

There's more, but I want to get this posted.

If anyone wants to help out,go to irey.com, get on her email list and contribute on-line there as well.

FRegards to all!

Slim & none? - Last I saw, the dems have a 150,000 voter edge in his district.

Huh? Kerry carried this district 51-49, IIRC. She's got a legitimate shot. She wouldn't be running if she didn't.

If Ron Paul (who is far more antiwar than Murtha) can get 80 percent vote against a pro-war Republican in the primary, Murtha will have a cakewalk in Pennsylvania (at least if any opponent attempts to make the Iraq quagmire the issue).

And if I can fit in my jeans from high school Al Gore will win back his Senate seat.

Hey Boss, I can't find a source for the 51-49 PA-12 results. Perhaps your linked post was my original source; I honestly can't recall at this point. PA's website only lists by county, and ex-Marine Murtha's district has portions of nine counties in it. Can you help? Thanks.

I'm in Murtha's district. He looks senile and silly and shrill to me. If she can mount a good campaign, she may be able to beat him.

Murtha is flat out calling Bush a liar. I don't think people in his district approve of his disrespect for the office of President. Murtha may be toast.

What a great day it would be if Murtha gets bumped. And I won't be surprised if he does.

I was gone for a while Coop, and missed your post.I remember finding the 51-49 breakdown and posting it somewhere on one of the Irey-Murtha threads with a link.

IIRC, I got it off the CNN website.Like you say,PA apparently only breaks it down by county.

I'll look around and see if I can find it.The 51-49 split is definitely accurate, I'm certain of that.

I'm even more certain once I saw AuH2O had posted it. But I still haven't yet located a source. Thanks.

OK, I wasn't able to paste the image. But here's the info from that page of Barone's Almanac:

"Politically, this was one of the most Republican parts of America from the Civil War up to the 1930s. Republican policies, including high tariffs and hostility to labor unions, were seen as protecting jobs and increasing growth in the steel economy centered on Pittsburgh. With the coming of the New Deal, and success of the United Mine Workers and the United Steelworkers, the area began voting mostly Democratic. Since 1945, on the Monday before primary and general elections, Democratic pols from across southwestern Pennsylvania have attended the "rally in the valley" held at the Slovak Home in the mill town of Monessen. But it has not followed the national Democratic Party on all issues. Voters here have strongly favored trade restrictions on steel imports, even when most other Democrats were free traders in the 1960s and 1970s; more recently most House Democrats have been opposing free trade measures. Voters here also tend to take conservative stands on cultural issues and foreign policy. This carefully carved district voted 55%-44% for Al Gore in 2000. But after George W. Bush imposed import quotas on steel and boosted clean coal technology, the district voted only 51%-49% for John Kerry."

"2004 Presidential Vote

Kerry (D) 141,046 (51%)

Bush (R) 133,088 (49%)

2000 Presidential Vote

Gore (D) 131,960 (55%)

Bush (R) 105,451 (44%) "
