OCALA, Fla. -- A Florida judge said a plea deal for a Tampa teacher accused of having sex with a 14-year-old would "erode public confidence in" schools.
Marion County Circuit Judge Hale Stencil has rejected the plea deal for Debra Lafave, 25. The judge said the deal would undermine the credibility of the criminal justice system.
Prosecutors and the defense lawyer had urged the judge to accept the deal for the good of the boy. A psychiatrist told the judge the boy suffered extreme anxiety because of intense media coverage of the case and does not want to testify.
Lafave was charged in two counties where she's accused of having sex with the student.
A judge in Hillsborough County accepted a plea deal there in November and sentenced Lafave to three years of house arrest and seven years' probation. She pleaded guilty in November to two counts of lewd and lascivious battery for having sex with the boy in a classroom and her home.
Her interview press conference is here:

She seems like a really nice person.
Because you do not make any sense.
Yes it is...
Read all the divorce and marriage threads.
All the same guys are over there whining and moaning about how
a. Their wives hated sex.
b. Their wives fooled around.
But here
oh boy....
Girls shouldn't like or need sex like boys, nonononono
HOWEVER, for boys, its a sacrement, necessary for survival.
Now, somewhere in this scramble of ideas, comes the concept that well,
Women aren't sexual like men,
OH...unless they are a woman with a boy.
OR a hooker,
OR a porn star.
but a normal, healthy 14 year old female isn't a sexual being, but boys are.
That is about as mixed as it gets.
LOL...that is the problem! Nobody wants the fourteen year old guy...your voice has barely finished doing that "hello HOW YOU DOING" High-Low thing...you have hair on your face that looks like dirt...oh wait...it IS dirt...:)
That makes no sense. You would hold it against your boyfriend that he did something when he was not old enough to consent to it? Either he was old enough to consent, or he wasn't. Which is it?
Nope, sorry. I will tell my boy that men are physically stronger and more hyper-sexual, because they are, and then I will tell him that he needs to restrain his impulses and show respect to women. That is not a mixed message.
"No, actually, I believe it has an effect on self esteem, and not a good effect. This boy is now prone to unhealthy relationships with women."
If anything it has bolstered his self esteem. Are you saying thats a bad thing? Also just saying that "This boy is now prone to unhealthy relationships with women" doesn't make it so. i could say that the boy is now prone to more healthy relationships with women. You need to show cause and effect if you want your argument to be taken seriously.
Just the thought that he "did" his teacher in Junior/High school is disgusting. Definitely NOT what women are looking for in men. But like some folks here say, he has his fond memories to hold on to doesn't he? I'm sure he will be fine with the girls in his school talking behind his back about what a loser he is. Afterall, he has the guys to cheer him on!
Certainly so.
Many, many girls/women will hold this against him.
I just don't think he's a "victim". Folks here act like he had no responsibility at all.
We hold 14 year olds who commit murder responsible, in many cases. Assuming mental competence, etc, I'm just trying to say I would hold this kid responsible too.
So you are basically saying that you would hold it against him that he was raped.
Me back on drugs? Now that WOULD be sight to see!Ha!
Sex is also a drug in many ways.I've seen plenty of men lose their fortune, their health, their family and their sanity chasing "that thing".
Perhaps you're right that I'm not hearing your point -- though from the main body of your posts, it appears you're tossing your lot in with the "yeah, baby" types on this thread.
But then, I also disagree with you about this kid's status as a victim. He is a victim -- he's too young to understand that there's a hell of a lot more to being a man than getting his willy wet, and this gal made it a lot more difficult for him to learn it. So not only will his later life be worse off for it, but also the lives of his ex-girlfriends and ex-wives.
I see.
I thought stating that the boy isn't a victim, but a perpetrator, was pretty straight-forward. I thought pointing out that a 14 year old boy *knows* what he's doing when he does what this kid did makes sense.
My mistake.
Was he raped?
neither and I don't think he would even bring it up unless she asked. No one really wants to hear about who their partner was with before marriage. The only people he would be proud to tell are his male friends.
Whats up with that is the fact that WE let these discrepencies to exist.I don't blame the Mexicans for"getting over on the system",I blame THE SYSTEM for letting these folks get over on them.
Good reply, and totally true.
First off,
I think it's about power and control, not sex.
Men just get all weird at the thought of 'their' females having sex. But they don't get that way about 'their' males. So their sweet little girl CAN'T want an orgasm as badly as they do (GASP!)
So, the message becomes
Sex feels good for guys, but hey! It doesn't (shouldn't, can't, won't, never will) feel as good for females.
Which leads to all kinds of problems later on...Ha!
Secondly,
Erm,
I'm a woman, and sadly, because boys are such self-centered creatures sexually, a woman is a fool to sleep with him ....the dance would be over before the music even started.
Which is why a teenage girl goes after an older guy (that's what we all did)....often for many of the same reasons guys go after sex. Yeah, we liked it too because it felt good.
Any female in authority over another person who abuses the trust in her status is an abuser, and a sick twisted piece of garbage. Yes, a molester. A sexual predator (OK, in her case idiot). The boy is a victim simply because he was her student and she was the person in power.
Again,
not about sex,
power and control.
By that token, 25 is too young to understand that in many (most???) cases.
I personally feel that if a 14 year old commits murder or has sex, assuming basic mental competence, etc, the kid knew what he was doing and is to be judged as an adult.
Thanks,Texan, but my boy Rodney was just being facetious.
Or I HOPE he was!
