53 Senators vote to raid the Social Security trust fund
Yesterday, Senators Jim DeMint and Mike Crapo introduced an amendment to prevent the current Social Security Surplus from continuing to be spent. 53 Senators voted against it.
After the vote, DeMint issued the following statement:
Sadly, fifty-three senators turned their backs on Americas seniors, Senator DeMint said. There is simply no way to save Social Security if we dont have the courage stop using the surplus as a secret slush fund. Im thankful there were forty-six senators who stood with Americas seniors to end the raid. We will not be deterred by cynics who offer no solutions.
Those who voted against this amendment voted to raid Social Security, said Senator DeMint. Now, every senator will be on record whether they oppose or support the raid. This said absolutely nothing about personal accounts, it was about whether you believe Social Security should be saved or allowed to wither on the vine.
Details about the amendment via a DeMint press release are in the extended section. UPDATE: Pasted below are the 53 Senators who voted to raid the fund -- Republicans who should no better are in bold. Click here to see the whole breakdown.

The current Social Security system allows Congress to spend the Social Security surplus on other government programs. Including interest, Congress has raided $1.7 trillion from Social Security since 1985. The surplus now only consists of IOUs stacked in a vault in West Virginia that can only be paid back by raising taxes or cutting spending.
The DeMint-Crapo Amendment to Stop the Raid on Social Security would have allowed the Senate to pass legislation with the following requirements:
· Social Security surpluses must be used to help pay for future benefits
· That it make no changes to the benefits of those Americans born before January 1, 1950
· That it provide a voluntary option for younger Americans to obtain legally binding ownership of a portion of their benefits.
Rush Ping!!!!
Good Morning,
W kicked butt this morning.
I am not surprised to see Clinton, Lautenberg, Menendez, and all of the libs on that list!
Looks like our two resident R senators (DeWine and Voinovich) in Ohio voted the right way on this for once!
No suprise here! My Senators, Lautenberg & Menendez are scum.
Johnnie on the spot this morning!!!
bttt
You know that, I know that, the peeples know that and the Senators know that.
It's just that the Senators will not do something that is good for this country if the results will not be seen for years or decades. They live and make decisions based on what will help THEM NOW, not what will help the country in 15 years.
Most Senators have no backbone, no spine, and their priorities are:
1. Keep themselves in power.
2. Keep their party in power.
3. Keep their large donors happy.
4. Steal as much taxpayer money as possible and buy votes for the next election (see #1).
5. Do everything possible to make members of the opposite party look worse than Pol Pot.
Notice something missing in the list above? Yup, you got it! What is best for the country as a whole is not there. What is best for ALL citizens (legal ones) is not there.
Politicians, at least the current crop, do not give a damn about the peeples. We are the ones that must be led, be lied to, be forced into certain actions. Politicians and their inflated egos only care about power: personal power, party power, donor power.
Us poor lonely peeples are not even an afterthought.
bump
Of course my "tax and spend" liberal senators voted to raid the money!

Good afternoon, Johnnie, thanks for the ping. In usual work, lurk and lunch mode...
TERM LIMITS WORK! It is time that Kennedy, Byrd, and some of these other career politicians were out of power.
Hey all!
Checking in while packing my office gear.
Teddy and Bobby Byrd haven't worked for so long they would be surprised that they work for anyone but themselves...
