Bob Schiefer calls the president "passionate." Gives him the nickname, "George Bush the Unleashed." Schiefer made these remarks in a clearly admiring tone as he signed off the CBS coverage.

Bush is right on about the entitlement programs. They are now approaching 50% of federal expenditures and are on automatic pilot under no one's control.

Should not a real leader of the USA make Congress eliminate this "auto-pilot"??? Should not a real leader make getting this spending level proper for the future of our descendants his #1 priority (other than national security)???

Remember, the very first sentence of one of Bush's State of the Union Addresses was about aid to Africa, not a crucial issue about America like this issue we are talking about.

C'mon!

This is why many conservatives disagree with this admin. The focus and the priorities and the agenda are not "America First".

Fox News is still on.

Never could get to their link. Went round and round. Could you provide one, even if almost over. Want to find out what's wrong so I can get it next time.

so Bush talking about SS reform while increasing social welfare spending in total is a sham.

Bush is talking about all entitlement programs, i.e., Medicare, Medicaid, and SS. The WH and Congress have no control over the rates of increase. Unless something is done to reform these programs, the costs will continue to increase exponentially due to automatic increases from fixed formulas and demographics, i.e., the baby boom cohort and massive increase in the numbers of people receiving benefits. The programs are unsustainable and the longer we wait, the more difficult they will be to solve.

In 1950, there were 16 workers paying Social Security taxes for every retired person receiving benefits. Today there are 3.3. By 2030, there will be only 2.

Social Security pays more than $450 billion in benefits each year. If nothing is done, by 2060, the combination of Social Security and Medicare will account for more than 71 percent of the federal budget.

Nearly 80% of Americans pay more in Social Security taxes than they do in federal income tax.

Every two-year election cycle that we wait to reform Social Security costs an additional $320 billion
