"I was under the impression that the World Trade Center didn't contain asbestos because the environmental concerns were too great when it was built. "

Wrong- at least one of the towers contained asbestos insulation for a certain number of floors up. I remember a lot of discussion about how, if both buildings had had asbestos insulation completely, that they would have survived much longer. Environmental regs were applied during construction, leaving top floors protected less.

Unfortunately for the lawsuits, mesothelioma typically takes 20 to 30 years from exposure to manifest.

That is probably with normal exposure. Do you remember the clouds of crap covering everything after 9/11?

I will never forget the scenes of people running from that incredible cloud of dust & debris following them down the street.

I suspect this is more than "normal" exposure. OTOH, I wonder who the lawsuit is against? If it against any muslim, give her family his whole worth and sell him into slavery to pay them more.

If it is against someone in the US with "deep pockets", the family is dishonoring all of us by trying to cash in on a casualty of war.

Hi All-

Everyone thought I was peculiar when I wore a respirator in that area for MONTHS following the terrorist attacks. Something about the air was funky and I knew it then as surely as I know it now. I learned a valuable lesson to always follow my gut instinct.

The EPA came out with an announcement within a couple of days that the air was safe. Schools within a few blocks of the WTC were re-opened, families returned to their apartments, kids from midwest church groups were sent into the area without respirators volunteering to clean apartments.

Hi durasell-

The government and business leaders were more concerned about economic collapse then they were about long-term effects on health. The only people who should have been in that area were those equipped with Scott AirPak type oxygen systems. The idea that innocent people were tricked into returning with "safe" reports of air quality is disgusting.

My first visit to the area wasn't until the third week of October 2001 and there was still a distinct metallic flavor to the air that settled in the back of ones' throat if you didn't continually wear a mask. It forced people to drink absurd amounts of water to wash it away. God only knows what that was. Glad I endured the laughs of coworkers and kept that mask/respirator firmly affixed to my face.

The "tip off" for a lot of people was when cars covered with dust were deemed condemned (or whatever the equiv. is for cars). A bunch of residents, parents of kids, etc. did get independent testing the second month and the toxins were off the charts in some locations.

In truth, nobody knows what really went into the "toxin soup" people were breathing or its long term effects.

There is no such thing as "normal exposure" to asbestos.

It is interesting that the lawsuits appear to have been filed by workers at the site, after the great majority of the dust had settled. The people running down the street on 9/11, who were presumably exposed to very high levels, were just bystanders. Certainly the morgue worker in the story would not have been exposed to truly massive levels, nothing like that of workers in shipyards during WWII, for instance.

Interestingly, one explanation for the quick collapse of the towers is that, as I understand it, one of the towers contained no asbestos fire protection material, and the other switched to another material part way up. It is generally agreed that asbestos is the most effective way to protect structural steel against high temperatures.

IOW, the towers quite likely might have stood longer and more people have escaped if asbestos had been used throughout.
