Man Shot During Store Robbery
Tulsa World ^ | March 19, 2006 | Shaun Epperson

Police say a customer with a concealed-pistol permit shot one of two armed men holding up a Tulsa grocery. A man was shot Saturday evening as he and another man attempted to rob a Homeland store near 91st Street and Memorial Drive, police reported.

Two men in dark clothing approached a register around 7:15 p.m and demanded money from employees as one of the men brandished a semi-automatic pistol, Capt. Brett Bai ley said.

Shortly afterward, a customer in line nearby pulled out a revolver and shot the man holding the pistol, Bailey said.

Police think the customer fired one shot at the robber, he said.

Although police don't know where the gunman was wounded, they know that he was hit, Bailey said.

"There was blood on the floor," he said. "He definitely was hit."

The two bandits then ran into the parking lot and fled in a white four-door sedan, Bailey said.

The vehicle possibly was an older model Oldsmobile, police said.

Police do not know whether the men got any money from the store, they said.

Officers locked down the store and asked everyone inside to give a statement about what they saw, Bailey

said.

Police said the customer who shot the robber had a license to carry a concealed pistol.

Several bystanders were in the store, but no one else was injured, police said.

A Homeland employee, Linda Lewis, said she was sacking groceries when she saw two men wearing hoods trying to push their way into a gated area of the store to an office where a safe was located.

"I turned around and saw these guys come in with hoods over their faces," she said.

She lay down on the floor, she said, because she "knew something was going to happen."

Next, she said, she heard gunfire and feared that an employee had been shot.

"I heard two shots, and I didn't know if a customer or a robber was shot," she said. "I thought we'd be next."

Lewis said she was "scared half to death," adding that she was thankful that no cus tomers or employees had been shot.

"If it hadn't been for him (the armed customer), there's no telling what would have happened," she said.

Police were searching for two men in connection with the robbery Saturday.

Anyone with information about this crime is encouraged to call Crime Stoppers at 596-COPS. Callers can remain anonymous, and the Crime Commission pays cash rewards for tips leading to the arrest of anyone who commits a felony crime.

No doubt, the two brazen criminals who entered a Homeland grocery store last night felt empowered, first because they were armed and second, because the site of their crime was in a relatively upscale residential area, inhabited by people who are mostly unaccustomed to the type of violent crimes that prevail in some other parts of town. What they hadn't considered, though, was the fact that one of the shoppers in the Homeland store had a permit to carry a concealed weapon. That shopper's quick reaction to the robbers' threat likely saved the lives of innocent people in the store last night, but even more, it put would-be violent criminals on notice that citizens are legally armed and unafraid of using their weapons to defend themselves and others in situations like the one last night.

Getting harder for armed robbers to make a living, but the gun grabbers are never deterred by facts.

I suppose it was too much touble to give a description, or perhaps the politically correct sensibilities of the writer got in the way.

Not me buddy. If you're gonna shoot me, you're gonna look me in the eyes when you do it. I want my eyes to be the last thing you see every night when you close yours.
That is if I don't get the chance to run. If I get that, all your gonna get is a chance to shoot me in my sizable gluttius maximus, as that's all you're gonna see of me headed out the door.
Thank goodness for the armed citizen. In this day CC should be the law of the land.

Actually, it's sad the perp was able to exit the store and scene...

Had a larger caliber or better round placement been used -- the story would have had a much happier ending..

"Two armed robbers, killed by citizen"...at NO COST to taxpayers.....

A happier endings (no pun intended) would have been the identification of two dead perps.

Two men huh? That really narrows it down.

OK, let's examine the article.

two men wearing hoods trying to push their way into a gated area of the store to an office where a safe was located.

It doesn't say that a cashier or a customer was being robbed. It doesn't say that the exit was blocked by the robbers. The first thing to do is get everyone out of the store.

Several bystanders were in the store

a customer in line nearby pulled out a revolver

Great. The article doesn't say that the robbers were threatening anyone and yet our hero starts a gunfight in a crowded store. Ever notice how when the police respond to a bank robbery they always wait for the robbers to come out of the bank. Why do you think they do that?

"If it hadn't been for him (the armed customer), there's no telling what would have happened," she said.

This witness isn't convinced by your argument. She doesn't know if any lives were saved. She is unsure of what would have happened.

The two bandits then ran into the parking lot and fled in a white four-door sedan, Bailey said.

Turns out our hero isn't such a great shot after all. He's lucky to be alive. He's lucky he didn't get anyone killed. He's lucky the robbers didn't shoot back. What kind of training did he have? There are a dozen ways that this could have ended and this guy is likely as hell!

Agreed. A piece of advice to all out there. If you're gonna shoot someone.. KILL him. DEAD men do not sue ya, and even if the man's family does, HE is not there to testify.
Whether your shooting was justifiable or not often makes little difference in how juries rule on those things (do not place your fate in the hands of 12 people who are too stupid to get out of jury duty).
If somehow you DO lose such a lawsuit, if he is dead... well he was probably not worth much so you do not pay as much as if there are expenses for caring for his crippled a** the rest of his life.

Gun Control is killing the target with the first shot.

I don't know where you buy your groceries, but when individuals approach a register, demand money and brandish a semi-automatic pistol in the stores where I shop, that's enough smoke to produce fire in my book.
