REYKJAVIK, Iceland — The United States, which has long provided Iceland with its only military force, has decided to withdraw most of its service members and all of its fighter jets and helicopters from the country later this year, the U.S. ambassador said Thursday.
Iceland's government, which had recently offered to pay some of the cost of its defense to try to keep U.S. forces here, said it regretted the decision.
In an interview with The Associated Press, U.S. Ambassador Carol van Voorst said she and Nicholas Burns, the U.S. under secretary of state, had told Prime Minister Haldor Asgrimsson and Foreign Minister Geir H. Haarde of the unilateral decision on Wednesday.

Just what I was thinking. It was the oppening attack of Clancy's WW III. The Ruskies shut down direct US air and sea access to Northern Europe.
Some are shorter and have green eyes (my down fall).
They don't look like hot girls from anywhere else.

Too fracking bad. Iceland has always treated all servicemen -- except for white officers -- as social untouchables. They remind me of the topside folks in the SG-1 Episode "What Lies Below," where the swells live in a wonderful deluxe city and the rest are enslaved in subterranean mines. As O'Neill says, "You can do your own shoveling for a while."

I entirely agree. IIRC, Iceland is the world's oldest democracy. And as you point out, they are very strategically located. This seems to be a bad decision from what I can tell.
I have a friend who has lived there. He too says the girls are gorgeous. He said they are basically pure blooded Vikings.
