Many of the major stock indexes have hit 5 year highs. The Dow Jones 30, the SP 500 included.
Some indexes are at all time highs, such as Russell 2000 and some of the other mid cap and small cap indexes.
It was not due to a major surge today, as the indexes were up modestly today. It is just that the trend has been up and we were near the highs.
On particular source is hard to pinpoint since we are dealing with stock indexes. You will see a lot about this on the business news shows. Tune into CNBC if you want the update.
I don't know what you mean.
The RATs feed lies and falsehoods (like the economy is bad) to the ignorant American public, and the public believes it.
The GOP, however, fails to beat the drums on positive news, assuming the American public is smart and keeps up to date with current events. They don't. America is not made up of an astute populace.
The RATs win the marketing game, the GOP loses.
I was waiting for the DOW to reach and maintain and above 10,800, before I would feel it's on solid ground. nless something big happens, I feel very, very comfortable. Just so long as the Dims stay out of power ;-)
My small cap spikers have been smokin!!
"America is not made up of an astute populace."
Careful with such broadstroke slander of your own people; the wisdom of crowds elected Bush twice, didn't it? Reagan was successful in the face of hostility because he deliberately went over the heads of all the would-be gatekeepers, and spoke directly to the public, in terms that resonated with the public. They responded positively, for the most part. The problem at present is that Bush does speak in mangled syntax, and his body language is forced. On the plus side, he does come across as more genuine than most anyone on the opposing, Democrat side of the aisle.
The President of the USA has the ability to be seen and heard more than any other person in the world!
Choosing to do so is the only option.
On an aside, take the State of the Union Address, for example. Do you know that George Bush's very first sentence in one of his addresses was giving charity to Africa!!!!!!
Now I ask you, if his first sentence was about SS and he said Social Security WILL collapse based on demographic trends and the Congress has been reluctant to prevent this, I guarantee you Bush and the GOP would have been in front of the cameras on national TV a lot in the following weeks.
Again, you are dead wrong.
Bush and the GOP have the ABILITY to be in front of the national TV cameras and be on the front page of every newspaper in the nation if they CHOSE to do so. No person has a bigger bully pulpit in the world than GWB, but he has neglected to do so, and so has neglected the GOP faithful, and has really, really neglected conservatives.
Re the stock trends, the economy is doing well and there is no major fear of inflation, and there is a lot of liquidity on the sidelines. The year of 2006 has the potential to be a good year.
2003 was outstanding all the way around, and 2004 and 2005 were decent for most of the indexes, and outstanding for the mid cap and small cap indexes. The mid cap and small cap indexes have trounced the large cap indexes over the last five years, as have many international indexes.
Recently I was wondering what happened to Bahgdad Bob. I now believe he has been hired by the GOP as a media consultant. It's the only explanation.
I do think much of the population is incredibly uninformed about anything outside its immediate little world, and I am pretty sure it has always been that way. The good part is, though, that large segments of that group just don't vote. That's why polls that simply reflect mass opinion are meaningless; non-voters have no impact on elections. I completely agree with you and other posters about how poorly this Administration articulates its positions. We really do need more eloquent and persuasive spokesmen for our side in the future, from the President on down. If we had both the programs and the packaging, the Rats would be completely non-competitive.
Broadside slander?
I said, "America is not made up of an astute populace."
This is not slander, it is fact. Facts are not slander. In addition, based on demographics, the populace is on a downhill slide in terms of being "astute". Even dumbing down "standardized tests" (what a joke) can't hide this fact.
Yes, they have. What is not known to most people outside of hardcore investors and brokers is that the small and mid cap indexes did very well when the crash happrned in 2000-2002. The crash was mostly a large cap crash, including the large cap technology issues.
Any reason why the price of gas here in the Dallas/Fort Worth area jumped up 35 cents a gallon in just 24 hours. Yesterday at noon it was 2.15, today at noon it's 2.49.
Doing very well.
Here is a 5 year chart of the iShares Dow Jones Real Estate Index. The long awaited crash has yet to materailize.
"In addition, based on demographics, the populace is on a downhill slide in terms of being "astute". Even dumbing down "standardized tests" (what a joke) can't hide this fact."
You appear to be on the verge of forgetting that you, yourself are part of the same populace, along with a number of Republican spokespersons. Elitism doesn't play well now, and never has, especially with everyday people who vote Republican.
Crude futures rose a little bit the last few days, but not enough to justify that type of increase.
I enjoyed telling this to my liberal co-workers today...several times. :)
The economy, the WOT, etc...
After the rise the last few days, crude futures fell almost $1 today. I can bet you the price of gas in Dallas will not fall as much as it rose--you know how that goes.

You ryhme real good! Or is it prose?
:)
McClellan should have been fired awhile ago.
The main problem with the Bush administration is that they are very poor at communications and, to a lesser extent, on the touchy-feely politics that the Sheeple eat up.
Here's hoping that Allen or Pawlenty or Romney or McCain learn from the Bush administration's mistakes in these areas.
