Authorities are trying to determine why two men in a pickup truck ran a checkpoint at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base this morning, crashing into a traffic barrier aimed at stopping unauthorized base entry.
Terrorism is not thought to be a motive at this point, but military officials and civilian police hope to learn what prompted the pair to speed past the control gate at Swan and Golf Links roads without stopping for required identification checks.
Both occupants of the 1999 Dodge truck were taken to University Medical Center with serious injuries. The men were not carrying identification and were unconscious when rescuers arrived at the traffic barrier, authorities said. Police have not been able to interview them.
There is no indication at this time that they are tied to international terrorism, Tucson Police Department spokesman Sgt. Mark Robinson said of the duo, who were described only as adult males.
But until authorities are sure, many details of the incident are being kept under wraps for security reasons, Robinson said.
Police are not commenting, for example, on the ethnicity of the driver and passenger, on who the vehicle is registered to or what color it is, and on whether there were any weapons on board. News crews also were not allowed to photograph the truck involved in the 6:45 a.m. incident.
Robinson acknowleged that it's unusual to maintain such secrecy around a vehicle accident.
But, in this case, he said, this is not just a traffic incident. This was a vehicle trying to force its way onto a military base, and until we are 100 percent sure we just cant comment on certain things."
The gate reopened around 12:30 p.m.
Test run?
Darwin Award Second Class?
Isn't this the second incident like this in a week?
The drivers last words, before crashing the gate were:....
"Hold muh beer....watch this!"
Illegal aliens who thought the base was the US border?????
Interesting no ID on the perps, hmmmmm........
Yep.
Yes, there was a suspicious vehicle at our sub base in Rhode Island.
If they expire in Hospital it could earn them the First Class award.
I don't recall.
Look for more attempts. I wouldn't be surprised if Code Pink or ANSWER is involved somehow. Could explain the No IDs
I'd say its aim is pretty good.
If that were the case his name would be on the back of his belt and that could be used for ID. The story said that the vehicle occupants had no ID so........
you made me laugh!
The APs don't like them folks too well so that's not too smart for the Peace-Niks if that's the case.
The second sentence in the "news" article. Surprised it wasn't the first sentence. It was one of two things. Either it was a failed truck bomb attempt or it was a test run. Either way, we will probably never hear what it really was and will probably be told it was just two people who were lost or something. Remember, if only one plane was involved in the 9/11 attacks, we'd still be hearing about that horrible ACCIDENT that destroyed one of the World Trade Center towers. Is it terrorism if no one knows that it was an attempt to cause us terror? That is just my opinion...
Yeah, what is the Race/national Origin of these Darwin candidates?
Base Commanders son and friend trying to get home before curfew?
