Two geological basins in northern Afghanistan hold 18 times the oil and triple the natural gas resources previously thought, scientists said Tuesday as part of a U.S. assessment aimed at enticing energy development in the war-torn country.
Nearly 1.6 billion barrels of oil, mostly in the Afghan-Tajik Basin, and about 15.7 trillion cubic feet of natural gas, mainly in the Amu Darya Basin, could be tapped, said the U.S. Geological Survey and Afghanistan's Ministry of Mines and Industry.

NO PEACE FOR OIL!
/s
Good. That destitute country could use some oil wealth. And since we are their strongest ally......hehehe
This would be good news for a nation whose main export is narcotics. It would provide jobs and cash for them to rebuild there nation from a crap hole into a relatively decent place to live work and build a business in that region.
hmmm...and to think it was occupied by Soviet backed forces a few years ago...
My thoughts exactly!
So now the truth comes out!!!
See it was all about oil all along.
And how do they intend on getting all that oil out? Afghanistan is surrounded by unfriendly countries.
GW is even slyer than I thought. ;o)
Norm Coleman will be against drilling in Afghanistan.
RINO.......
"And since we are their strongest ally......"
Naw, we are the enemy of the enemy of the present "government".
A more accurate headline is that scientists predict greater reserves. The USGS is good, but you don't know how good until you actually drill.
They've been wrong in the past.
Sure seems like there's oil everywhere under our feet. Hope we can get it out of the ground over there okay.
And unlike past govt's, we are staying put til it can consolidate its army and control. And stacking up terrorists in the process. It's a beautiful thing.
Cheney knew this when he was head of Haliburton. Karl Rove got some Jews to stage 9-11 so Bush/Cheney/Haliburton could occupy Afgan for its oil.
When in the H are scientist going to find a gusher in this country?!! I cannot believe we do not have some great oil field sitting under one of our deserts just waiting to be discovered.
My thoughts exactly...
This could resurrect talk of the pipeline through Pakistan for which Blil Clinton courted the Taliban (and for which Michael Moore and the moonbats blamed Bush, of course).
This will be the best news of the month, at least. Can you imagine a prosperous Afghanistan in a couple decades? Elections, more freedom for women, coming into the 20th century, etc. A modern Islamic society may not be an oxymoron if that happens but to me this is nothing short of fantastic.
