BEVERLY HILLS - Facing a state audit and possible criminal investigation of the state commission he chaired, movie director Rob Reiner on Monday said his opponents are targeting him for attacks to avoid discussing the merits of the universal preschool initiative he put on the June ballot.
"They will do whatever it takes to knock this thing out," he said in an interview with The Bee. "So they will attack me because they know they can't talk about the initiative."
Opponents responded that they have discussed the shortcomings of Proposition 82, including their argument that raising taxes on the wealthy to pay for preschool for all 4-year-olds could harm the state economy.
"We are not the ones who have called for any investigations," said Joel Fox, the opposition campaign's co-chairman. "That has come from the legislators or the press."
But Reiner pointed out that the opposition campaign's original name was "Stop the Reiner Initiative."
"Stop Reiner!" he exclaimed. "Stop Reiner? Stop Reiner from what? From giving kids preschool?"
For the past three weeks, Reiner has been under fire from lawmakers because the First 5 California commission he chairs spent $23 million in taxpayer money on ads promoting preschool while Reiner was qualifying his "Preschool for All" initiative for the ballot.
Reiner sponsored Proposition 10, the 1998 initiative that created the commission he chairs and raised tobacco taxes to pay for early childhood programs.
"This money generated by Proposition 10 was not a private slush fund for Mr. Reiner to use," said Assemblyman Dave Cox, R-Fair Oaks. "It appears that is what has transpired."

True, but it backfired on them when more people identified and agreed with Archie than the other characters. Of course with the money they made off of it, we are still plagued by Lear and Reiner and Arthur...
I ran a business for nine years before going into academe. If I had taken money from investors which was clearly meant to be invested in one thing and I had invested it in manufacturing demand for a thing other than that which I indicated--even if related to the first thing--I would have been charged with Fraud.
I guess when its government money it is simply "empire-building."
McVey
Yep--except the 'free' part. That's courtesy of the taxpayers, of course.
...and of course, the Left in California only wants to indoctrinate the children; so why not start earlier? This only prepares them for Elementary, Middle School, Senior High and College.
My intentions are unassailable!!My heart is PURE !!!
Nothing else matters!
Did you catch Sally Struthers on "Still Standing" the other night? Yikes!
Yes, yes, Rob, you...you alone...you personally...are giving every 4 yerar old in Cal pre-school. So why is it on the ballot, again?
Indoctrination by Govt "educators", as you so rightly point out, was the very same apparatus and agenda that the Progressives borrowed from the Euro-dictators whose considerable power they greedily wanted for themselves, and got thru judicial fiat.
No.
That bad, huh?
Stop Reiner from spending money that ain't HIS.
Did someone say "Arthur"?
It should be attacked on its merits and the only way to defeat it is to tell the people how many of the children who will benefit are illegal aliens and how much money will be spent on these illegal aliens each year.
Uh, yeah. That's why it's called 'the opposition', you dork.
I'll be kind and say, "Yep."
And, showing the lack of imagination by the opposition group.
They should have called it the "Stop The Meathead's Initiative". It would have resonated well with Boomers!
Beatrice!
But Dudley has a better sense of humor and the movie was outright hilarious!
What talent and penache! Only DM could have pulled off getting into character by getting soused everyday when filming a movie about a drunk!
We can talk about both, Meathead.
Interesting comment.... could it be the Hollywood elite would like free babysitters for their illegal housekeepers-nannies-gardeners kids? Guess they are just helping out their employees.
Meathead's premise is so dead wrong. Preschool is ONLY better than a hot car outside your john's apartment. Even a poor mother at home doing her laundry, with a few simple toys and books, is a better companion for a 3 year old than all preschools put together. There is nothing wrong with a good preschool, but being home with a loving, caring parent will teach and civilize the child better than a group situation.
And having the state take over all costs means that LESS moms will feel they are capable of caring for their own children. It STINKS. I would love to kick Meathead in the butt.
Uh... Rob...
