The key difference is that a magazine contains a spring and follower to push each round into firing position. A clip holds a set of loaded cartridges in a convenient orientation for rapidly loading the internal magazine of the firearm. The M1 Garand has the spring and follower as part of the firearm. The clip holds the cartridges inside the magazine and is ejected on the last round. The SKS rifle uses a "stripper clip" that aligns in a channel on the face of the bolt when locked in the open position. The user aligns the clips in the channel and shoves 20 rounds down into the magazine. The stripper clip is set aside to be refilled with another 20 cartridges. Strippers are just a convenient way to reload an internal magazine rapidly.
