Police trying to piece together why a gun was stored in a family's couch and how it ended up in a three-year-old's hands.
According to police the boy found the gun in it's hiding place in the couch. When the boy's mother saw her son with the gun she took it from him, removed the clip, and put the gun back in the couch not knowing it was still loaded.
"The three year-old picked up the gun and fired it - there was a round still in the chamber - striking the mother in the knee," St. Paul Police Officer Pete Crum told 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS.
An ambulance took the 43-year-old woman took Regions Hospital where she's in fair condition. Investigators plan to forward the case to the Ramsey County Attorney's Office for possible child endangerment charges.
Officer Crum wants this case to serve as a reminder to other gun owners to always lock the slide back, open the chamber up and feel the chamber with their finger before they assume the gun is unloaded.
I've learned not to use the term "clip" with respect to a semi auto. However, what exactly is the difference? What IS a clip? Is it a matter of having exposed ammunition (as in feeding a belt through a gun) vs. having it covered (as in a magazine)? Thanks.
Especially with a round in the pipe. Most couches have wood slats under the cushion. Enough moving and wallowing around could possibly cause a discharge. Not likely, but they don't call them "accidental" for nothing.
"it's hiding place"

In all likelihood. :)
Hiding a loaded gun in a couch with a 3 year old... is pretty foolish and then after he's already found it, putting it back there again?
This woman is luck it was only her knee that got shot... Someone up stairs has given her 2 chances to learn her lesson... that's more than many get..
She died from being shot in the knee?
"The three year-old picked up the gun and fired it - there was a round still in the chamber - striking the mother in the knee,"
Low hits are usually caused by jerking the trigger. Next time squeeeeze more slowly, and shoot from a highchair.
They had a M1 Garand stuck in the couch?
No, we make smartass comments in response to dumbass comments before we read the rest of the thread. That is the way we do things around here. If we all read all the way through the thread before we replied, we would never get to make our smartass comments.
And this guy is an officer!?!?
FIREARM RULE #1: ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED!
That cleared THAT up...
This is a "clip", from an M1 Garand.
This is a Magazine.
"Police removed several guns from the home and said the boy's father had been handling the gun Saturday night.
The boy was in his father's care Sunday. His father, identified by friends and property records, is Lili Pan.
Lili Pan is the managing director of the Chinese American Association of Minnesota's Chinese Dance Theater.
Investigators said they would forward the case to the Ramsey County attorney's office, which could consider filing child-endangerment charges.
A next-door neighbor said the family has lived in the house for eight or nine years.
"They are wonderful people," Carol Christensen said. "They're great neighbors. I am so sorry this happened."

Well, I have a gun in my fridge. Does that make me stupid? /sarcasm
